Just in case anyone is attending UVic, there's an Alien Grammar class being taught by one of the syntax profs in the Fall semester.
Yes, I will be attending |

Of course I will, when the class starts
Unfortunately there's no course description up because it's listed as an "Independent topic" class; I'll try to get some details from the prof and get back to you. |

Definitely!
I'm taking the opportunity to start doing a formal write-up of the logical/oligosynthetic language I've been attempting. Maybe I can hand it in at the end of the semester for extra credit! |

Oh I will!
I'm going to be asking her (the prof also teaches upper-level syntax classes) about some of the work I've been doing with my conlang, to see how realistic it is, and references I should look into to make it work better.
@eldin: The link to Vampiric goes to a search for the word - which are you referencing? |

but note she is dismissed as "a linguist" in the main answer; you have to go down to the comment by "by Anonymous on August 13th, 2009" to see her listed as
Anonymous on August 13th, 2009 wrote: | It was developed by Helen Charters who is a lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Auckland.
Evenly though its entirely fictional and you only hear bits of it in the movie, its actually a fully functioning language with a grammatical system and everything. |
In http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389722/combined she is listed as "Helen Charters .... dialogue coach".
Peter Wills, Auckland, May 15, 2010, 9:42AM wrote: | A very similar process was used by Dr Helen Charters of the University of Auckland to create the Vampiric language spoken in the movie "30 Days of Night" (2007). Vampiric also has a cult following, which probably scales according to the movies' respective budgets and the fees paid to these two independent creators of new languages. Vampiric has words for some extraordinarily complex concepts like "bioinformatics". I suspect that Vampiric is a much richer language than Na'vi, but the linguists can fight out the pecking order for themselves. In the end it is the money that does the talking. |
Also watch the main video; Paul Frommer about the creation of Na'vi
Or, you know, you could go through those search results and find out which ones were relevant, like I just did. _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |

small update: The textbook will be the Language Construction Kit by Rosenfelder Unfortunately I checked his site and it lists a new ('advanced') book coming out, but next summer, so we won't be able to use that one...
Also we'll be reading from the Klingon Dictionary (which I happen to own already). |

Thanks for the update!
I wonder if Mark R. knows they're using his "Kit"? _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |

Update:
The class is better than I expected
The "short research report" is a report on any conlang (I'm thinking about Ithkuil, but I'm open to suggestions!)
And the "Mini-grammar" is one that we make ourselves, which will include sections on each topic we discuss in class (as per the syllabus, previously posted here). So of course I'm going to be working on my Oligosynthetic-type lang, and with a deadline, it should get done!
I'm also taking a class on lexical semantics, from which I've already gotten a book from the prof to read, "The Generative Lexicon" which should be rather useful for the concept-based word formation structure I'm working on
And a phonology class to tidy up the phonology and phonotactics side of things, along with a suggestion to talk to an expert in Salish phonology if I'm interested.
If all goes well, I'll publish the extended grammar based on the grammar from the class sometime in December or January. |

For our first major assignment, we did a research report on a constructed language, and I did end up doing it on Ithkuil to get a better sense of how it was put together.
Here's a link for anyone interested:

The reason for its shortness was a word-count restriction (obviously could have gone into excessive detail, so I'm kind of glad for the limit).
Enjoy!

It was, indeed, enjoyable.
I would think your instructor is impressed.

Glad you liked it
I hope she won't be overwhelmed... it was only 350 words over limit
Should be getting the marks back pretty soon, it's a small class. |
