Well, on another forum I stumbled on a link to some of the theories regarding how people started using words to describe everything they could perceive with their 5 senses, or even with a 6th one. One of them belong to Dr. C. George Boeree so take a look here if you wish. It's a short document so don't worry about having to spend too much time on reading it. Of course, there's also the infamous wiki with their own articles about the evolution of languages.
Can we really believe or imagine this might have be the only way our ancestors could develop their own local languages? Did / Do your concultures follow the same path or a different one in an effort to create their own languages?
I guess my concultures would either think an really brilliant entity develop it, not necessarily a god but an angel, a demon, an "intelligent" void, gave this ability to humankind or any other species it considered that was worthy of getting it and expressing their own ideas with words that wouldn't hurt its ears. _________________ Seos nivo adgene Kizne tikelke

Interesting reading, both the C. George Boeree and the Wikipedia.
Quote: | Did / Do your concultures follow the same path or a different one in an effort to create their own languages? | My main conculture is a human one, known by them to be descended from some Earth cultures (with many drastic adaptations due to new and pressing circumstances).
I haven't done much yet with my alien conculture, but they meet the humans I've already mentioned and take up their language, at least for talking to anyone other than within their own species.
So I just haven't handled that issue in my own conworld. _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |

Indeed, I avoid it as well, by starting my conworlding in an era corresponding to around 4000 BC.
It's certainly interesting to read about the theories, but it's hard to get past plain speculation. I generally avoid trying to answer the question at all. |

Lately I'm trying to figure it out for the sake of my conworlds and the only thing I'd imagine would be the hunter's need to describe the prey they would like to hunt, how delicious or crispy it should taste and how much they could impress their partners and mates with their amazing (fake) stories of how they achieved these things. Of course this is kind of, err, chauvinistic or sexist or something like that, but it'd just explain why males in those societies were interested in developing a language. _________________ Seos nivo adgene Kizne tikelke
