Does anyone here know/studied etc Akkadian?

I'm looking for some resources to make a conlang out of, maybe a script as well. I want to do something different than a simple SVO or etc lang, and I don't know enough other linguistic interestings to do something completely different. (There was a conlang I was reading about - very complete, had a 50+ page dissertation etc Wink that didn't even use a verb for 'to be.' I couldn't understand most of it, and the glossing was unlike anything I'd seen. Hopefully I'll be able to find it again - I lost the link when my computer crashed.)

Thanks!

I know nothing about Akkadian, but it would be interesting to learn more.

I only know what I read in Campbell's "Concise Compendium of the World's Major Languages".
Akkadian has both genitive case and construct state; and it has SVO word-order dominant while most Semitic languages have verb-initial dominant, or at least as dominant as SVO.
And that's what I know. Not a lot, is it?

I've been trying to learn Akkadian through Introduction to Akkadian by Richard Caplice. By and large I like the book, but I find the section on the Construct State to be confusing. I'm having trouble with the verbs, but that has nothing to do with the presentation in the book. I also suggest going to Google Books and doing a search for Akkadian. There are several books that you can download (they're all old).

All right, thanks! Though Google Books sometimes doesn't have the full book, and to be honest, it's hard to read full length books via the computer - I prefer to be able to carry it around, read it wherever, etc.

I definitely agree. I've got a bunch of documents relating to the Yukaghir language(s) and it's tough reading these long docs on the computer. So I've been severely slacking off in my research there.
