So, I was sitting in a lecture theatre of the Examinations Schools in Oxford just a few days ago and this forum came back to the foreground of my mind. Just a few minutes ago, someone emailed me saying that they wanted to register here, so hopefully (fingers crossed and all that), I will be around for a little more during my summer vacation (which is still around 2 months long!)

How is everyone doing, and what are you doing? Unfortunately, with university work and all of that, I haven't really been able to do much conlanging or conscripting, but every now and again, that nostalgic feeling comes up. I find myself looking at my Eleypherion website, or browsing around on Omniglot... but how about you? I'd love to have a nice catch-up session with all of you. =)

I'm OK.

It's 100 F here (38 C). Feels like 115 F (46 C) because of the humidity.

I keep meaning to get back to developing my conscript for Adpihi, but between clearing away the last previous obstacle and my next chance to get on it, so far, something else has always come up.

Maybe this time it won't.

I'm going into UT as a linguistics major this fall! (that is, in a month and four days)
I'll finally make physical friends who share my interests (though I have bumped into Aeetl once in person, which was awesome). I'm looking forward to it immensely.

Reading history articles on Wikipedia in my spare time has been inspiring me to conworld again, hopefully something will come of it. Haven't done much the past couple of years though, I've had my head so deep into Japanese that I almost forgot how much I like linguistics in general.

It's been highs of 35+ C here for the last three months straight, practically, and pathetically little rain (this is Texas, it's a horrible drought). I've given up checking the weather.

By UT do you mean University of Texas?
(Their linguistics program is famous.)

Or another state university -- e.g. U of Tenn -- in the U.S.A.?

Or some other university, probably in some other country?

Wow, I am liking the fact that it is nice and warm in the places that you two are staying. It's only around 23 degrees Celcius over in the UK. I wish that it was a little warmer.

@eldin raigmore - Hopefully no more obstacles will crop up! Good luck with it.

@T_F - Wow, your semester starts so soon. I'm also wondering what the acronym UT stands for too. How long will your linguistics major be and do you also minor in a different subject? It'll be great to meet people with similar interests.

And oh, how did you meet Aeetl?! I don't think I heard about that...

How long have you been studying Japanese for?

Oh, if only you could just take away some of the extremely heavy rain we've been having in the UK.

Yes, it is University of Texas. (Living in Austin, I forget that it's not immediately obvious.) It is a bit confusing, since ut.edu is Tennessee, and Texas is utexas.edu.
Their famous linguistics program is part of the reason I'm there, the other part is their amazing proximity to where I already am.

The major itself is almost certainly four years (almost everything is, except education is generally five, and some manage to pull out of theirs in three (four for education)). I'll probably keep on going for graduate school, maybe at UT, maybe somewhere else.
I'll be minoring in history, but a minor (at least here at UT) is a lot less official than a major, and almost decided after the fact. It's really weird.

American school terms are typically mid-August through May, with universities getting out towards the beginning of May and grade schools getting out nearer the end. (Graduation for several public schools around here was like 4~5 June this year.)

Trust me, you wouldn't like it at all. It's miserable, even for us who are supposed to be used to heat. At this point, we'd be happy with 33.
23 sounds nice, I tend to like about 15-20 (but I like cold temperatures in general).

Quote:

I don't know that anyone has, it was pretty recent. We both happened to be at a regional Latin competition around here (this was in like February IIRC, we both live in the Austin, TX area), and ran into each other.

Quote:

Four years, though no formal instruction. Being a mild otaku helps massively.

Quote:

If only.
I was in London for a few days last August and it was the most amazing weather ever. I got to wear a jacket! In August! (And then we went to Norway and it was even better.)
Ended up getting rained on both places - pouring rain one day in London, then medium-strength rain the day we were in Bergen. It made me happy.

Also, my own script thread is now blocked by my stupid internet security program (gaaaaaah), so if someone could go in and fix whatever might be triggering that that would be great.

Life's been the same, mostly. Senior year (the one before university) starts in a month or two. I did in fact meet T_F at a Latin competition, which was a lot of fun (I don't believe I've actually heard linguistic terms being spoken before that). I found my character sheets for my conlang, so I should be more productive.

I've been working and looking for a more permanent job, preferably closer to what I actually want to be doing. I'd like to shift from maintenance work to something more like translating or interpreting, or at least get into a certificate program somewhere. I went through some serious depression during my last year at college so I've put conlanging aside for a while.

I'm still alive - started my studies in University of Latvia. I'm studying French and Italian. I have a good reason to think that by the end of this semester I won't be able to function in English anymore, as it will be written over by a pidgin of French and Italian Very Happy

Getting used to college life - it's kind of crazy, I'm in multiple honours classes and have a paper output of about six pages every Monday-Tuesday period. (Rest of the week is fine though Confused )

Linguistics class is weird, because I haven't really learned anything new at all yet (it's just intro to ling) but I'm still really enjoying it. Sadly, no time for actual languages - I'm already at 16 hours.

Hell no. I'll make sure you don't forget English.

Do you hear me?

You can't forget what these are called either. It's against the law to do so.

Hehehehe ^^;;

No one should forget their mother tongue. The horror.......hence me making you not forget English. Or perhaps sending the Boingies to do it? Eh either way. Razz

I do hope they teach you linguistic lingo there T_F. I don't know too much of it unfortunately so you'll have to teach me more. Mr. Green

Fill in the blanks: Wapo _______for those who do you get a boingy. Yay! *^^*

Serali, that is precisely the point, that English is not my mothertongue. I'm glad if I managed to fool you though! Smile That means my English is not that bad Smile

@T_F I hate this question, when it is asked to me, so you can choose to disregard it, but what are you going to do with that education when you graduate? Smile I mean, do you have a plan, or are you just going to wait and see (I'm not judging in any way, because wait-and-see is precisely my attitude towards the future Wink )

At least in text, your English is effectively indistinguishable from that of a native speaker.

Either stick in academia, get a PhD, and do fieldwork or historical ling research (which I'm already doing on my free time here Razz); or teach English in Japan (or maybe Japanese in America, but that sounds rather less appealing since it involves staying in America). Maybe some of all of that.

But but but your English is perfect.

What's your mother tongue then? Want to know how to say boingy in it.
