It's not Na-Déné, and it is spoken in Canada.

Yaaay! Very Happy Honestly, I couldn't have guessed it if TF hadn't guessed Nisga'a. It was only a little bit of research after that, so thanks, TF!

Please answer any ten of the following 23 questions? Please?

It wouldn't be fair to ask you to answer all of them on one go, because if I were to ask the right questions I should be able to completely specify your language in just 12 or 13 questions.

If I were to ask the right questions, with 10 questions I would be able to eliminate 99.9% of the world's languages.

OTOH if you chose to answer only the least informative ten questions, still, other posters could learn something. I assume you won't do that on purpose, but that's up to you.

_____________________________________________________________

(1): Is it an Austronesian language?

(2): Is it spoken on/in Taiwan?

(3): Is it still a vigorous language (i.e. in frequent use by speakers, plus being acquired as an L1 by new speakers)?

(4): Is it taught in High School?

(5): and/or College or Junior College or University?

(6): Is it an "Oceanic" language?

(7): Is it the official language of the country where it's spoken?

(8): If not, is the official language of that country a European language?

(9): If so, is it one of English or Spanish or French or Dutch or Danish or Portuguese?

(10): Is the home country of this language a tropical location in the western or mid-western Pacific?

(11): Is it related to Inuit or Yupik?

(12): Is it spoken in/on Australia?

(13): Are all of its syllables (C)V syllables?

(14): Does it have fewer than 20 consonant phonemes?

(15): Does it have more than 15 vowel phonemes?

(16): Does it have lexical tones?

(17): Is that poem Tolkien's "One Ring" poem translated into your language?

(18): Does that language have a word for "caribou"?

(19): Or a word for "iguana"?

(20): Have you been able to find anything out about that language's typology? For instance, word-order type?

(21): Do fir trees grow there?

(22): Are there pines?

(23): Are there mountains?

That's it.

No problem! ^_^

Danish? AFAIK they only own Greenland, and no one that's not Denmark has Danish as a first language. And that's definitely not Kalaallisut.

My first guess would also be Austronesian (or maybe Mon-Khmer, but that seems less likely). It might also be some sub-Saharan African thing.

EDIT: Is the diaeresis a tone-marking diacritic here? If it's not, are any of the rest tone diacritics?

Ok, then, T_F; edit my questions down to those you think are still reasonable, or at least not egregiously unreasonable.

Maybe it's a language from the (formerly Belgian) Congo, and the official language there is Flemish?

I will answer some of those questions... tomorrow.
As for today, only two.

Yes, it is an Austronesian language, and no, the diacritics do not indicate tone Wink

Oh, they were all fine! I was just curious what you had in mind with Danish.

Sadly, apparently the Democratic Republic of the Congo has French as its official language. >_>

Hm. Austronesian.

Whether or not it's spoken on Taiwan (or on the islands around Taiwan) is now a very important question.

Not Bunun. Not Rotuman. Not spoken in Taiwan (nor the islands around Taiwan)

Now, some of the questions!

Quote:
(11): Is it related to Inuit or Yupik?
(13): Are all of its syllables (C)V syllables?
(15): Does it have more than 15 vowel phonemes?
(17): Is that poem Tolkien's "One Ring" poem translated into your language?

Not related to Inuit or Yupik (but I guess you already knew that Razz
Yes, all syllables are (C)V
Yes, it has more than 15 vowel phonemes
I wish! But no Very Happy

I feel like I have given you a lot of info to process Smile

I'm guessing they don't have a native word for caribou, then. Nor elk nor moose nor reindeer.

What about iguana? Monitor lizard? Komodo dragon?

Do they have words for crakes, coots, and gallinules?

Would you say it's a Melanesian language?

Is it spoken in Panama?

Is it spoken on Komodo?

Is it spoken on Vanuatu?

Is it spoken in a former Scottish colony?

New Zealand?

New Guinea?

New Britain?

New Ireland?

New Georgia?

South Georgia?

South Sandwich?

Île des Pins?

New South Wales?

Was it ever a territory of Canada?
