I figured if I were going to keep posting song lyrics for people to translate and transliterate or transcribe in their conlangs and conscripts, it might be smarter to put them all in one thread, just in case people didn't feel like doing all of them.
Here's another lyric; maybe you'd only want to translate/transliterate/transcribe the first verse. Or the refrain. Or the last verse.
Traditional wrote: | (V1)
Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme
Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may and might never all meet here again
(R)
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may and might never all meet here again
(V2)
Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well
Her style and her beauty, sure none can excel
There's a smile upon her countenance as she sits on my knee
Sure there's no one in in this wide world as happy as we
(V3)
Our ship lies at harbor, she's ready to dock
I hope she's safe landed without any shock
If ever we should meet again by land or by sea
I will always remember your kindness to me |

It rained all night the day I left;
the weather was bone-dry.
The sun was so hot I froze to death;
Susannah, don't you cry!

Tune: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:British_Grenadiers.ogg
Slightly different lyrics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_British_Grenadiers#Lyrics (an extra verse, a few words different, some different spelling)
Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules,
Of Hector, and Lysander, and such great names as these:
But of all the world's brave heroes there's none that can compare
(With a tow-row-row-row-row-row!) to the British Grenadier.
Whene'er we are commanded to storm the palisades,
Our leaders march with fuzes, and we with hand-grenades.
We throw them from the glacis about the enemy's ears!
With a tow-row-row-row-row-row! The British Grenadiers!
And when the siege is lifted, to the town we do repair.
The townsmen cry, "Hurrah, boys! Here comes a grenadier!
"Here come the grenadiers, my friends, who know no doubts nor fears!"
With a tow-row-row-row-row-row! The British Grenadiers!
So, let us fill a bumper, and drink a health to those
Who march with caps and pouches, and wear the loupèd clothes.
May they and their commanders live happy, all their years!
(With a tow-row-row-row-row-row!) The British Grenadiers.
more stuff in this search
Interestingly all the YouTube stuff for U.K. and Hong Kong and Singapore and other British sites use the performance of "The British Grenadiers" performed by the United States Army Band Strings ensemble. _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |
