I've recently become a bit of a rail nerd (^_^'), and I've written a couple of things exploring the use of trains in conworlds.

The first is perhaps more interesting to this board -- it's set in a modern version of Emitaru, and describes a journey from a small mountain town to the capital. It was actually (awesomely enough) for a school assignment -- we were reading Sir Thomas More's Utopia, and the assignment was 'create your own utopia', but since I don't believe such a thing is possible I described Emitaru, which I think is at least a bit better than America if not perfect. There's a lot of little asides about Emitaru scattered throughout the thing.

The second is maybe a bit less interesting. It's set in an alternate history involving a colonial Japan and a couple other things that you'll notice. It's a Wikipedia-style article on the high-speed rail network in Japan's former North American colony (called 日果 Nikka, as an antonym for Nihon).

I'm curious if people can guess the OTL counterparts of any of the cities mentioned there. (You don't get points for San Diego.)

I hope they're interesting ^_^

I really liked the story! Have you thought of turning into a part of something bigger? Because to me this seemed like it could be the first chapter of a longer story Wink

Thank you! Yeah, I've been trying to turn it into something, but I haven't had as much inspiration. (I'm extremely bad at coming up with good plots.)
Maybe I'll finally sit down and do it one of these days.

Also, I don't know if you have magic in your world, but maybe this works:
The "I'm new here, overwhelmed by magic" plot Very Happy

Or maybe all at once? I, for one, love complicated plotlines Smile

In a world that has dwarves and trolls and railroads, are dwarves helpful or inconvenient around trains' tunnels? Are trolls a problem for railroad bridges or in the mountains?

Those sound like good ideas, I'll think about them. I was almost thinking about something like 'I'm new here, trying to avoid being noticed'.

Loved the Emitaru story, but unfortunately your notes do not show up right for me. Can you explain Emitare naming conventions? What little the main character hints at sounds fascinating.

Hmm, the notes aren't not off to the side? Are you using a different browser?

The naming convention notes are (in order)
*'Sjiveru who is from Talhikaru'
*'Sjiveru who is a thinker'
*'Sjiveru who reads'
*'Sjiveru [who is the son] of Somidharu'

It very well could become hereditary in some places, but the Emitare people as a whole don't much like inheriting things. (They've had some bad experiences in the past with hereditary nobility and monarchy.)
