Hey,

I'm looking into doing a serious project on alien language/linguistics, and I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions, considerations, references, stuff to look into, etc.

Here's the basic outline so far:

Introduction
Language as a tool (uses of language, etc)
Hypothesizing a truly alien language
(previous conlangs/etc of 'alien langs')
Environmental constraints on alien physiology
Neuromorphology and constraints
Communication systems
True linguistic universals
On designing an artificial language for xenocommunication
[maybe: culture (given that communication is a sociocultural act)]
Conclusions

Thanks in advance!

Do you plan writing some kind of a school-book-type work? Or did I misunderstand something?

No, an essay. I don't think the topic could be addressed anywhere near properly with anything less.

Then I'd say you pretty much got it covered, unless, of course, you want to go in GREAT depths with this.
Oh, I'm not sure, but I don't see you mentioning language peculiarities that are influenced by culture (or the other way around), like, for example, the great system of honorifics in Japanese and stuff like that Wink I think that this is a big thing in xenocommunication Smile (between two human nations already, not even speaking about aliens)

I Do want to go to great depth with this, which is why I'm looking for suggestions from anyone - I can only think of what I can think of and such.

I did mention culture slightly, but culture would be a lot harder to narrow down in an alien species; just look at the diversity of culture on Earth, whereas the diversity of language still results in the same goals.

I would like to see the end product, but as to suggestions, I have none left, sorry.

alright, I'll post a link to the end result in a couple months Razz

I have no illusions as to how long this is going to take, especially treating this like a true academic paper - I'll need real academic articles/papers/sources etc, and so read through a couple hundred pages in the preparation...

Oh, well, it should be fun Smile

Translate:

"That is my companion. It is not intended as a tip."
(from: "Useful phrases for the tourist", author unknown)

In fact, I think I'll put that up as a Translation-and-Transcription Challenge.

Not bad, I've taken a bit of a hiatus due to Christmas and etc, but I've been reading a bit of a book I got on animal communication that's quite good.

I'll post some more stuff on here once I've done some more work.
