I just saw "Chess" the musical (really, really good, I must tell you), and this song is, I think, really good for getting a sense of patriotism in your conlang.

No man, no madness
Though their sad power may prevail
Can possess, conquer, my country's heart
They rise to fail
She is eternal
Long before nations' lines were drawn
When no flags flew, when no armies stood
My land was born

And you ask me why I love her
Through wars, death and despair
She is the constant, we who don't care
And you wonder will I leave her - but how?
I cross over borders but I'm still there now

How can I leave her?
Where would I start?
Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart
My land's only borders lie around my heart

I like it. It's patriotic and not in an annoying way.

kanashii sono chikara ga katte mo,
hito mo kyouki mo
waga kuni no kokoro wo motenu,
waga kuni no kokoro ni katenu.
sorera wa shippai suru you ni noboru,
kanojo wa eien nari.
kuni no hate wa egakareta mae mukashi,
hata mo guntai mo arazu,
waga kuni wa umaredasu.

naze ai suru ka to kiku
sensou mo shini mo zetsubou mo atte,
kanojo wa kawaranu, kamawanu monotachi no tame
ware ga hanareru ka na to iu - shikashi, dou yatte?
hate wo watashite mo, mada soko ni iru yo.

dou yatte hanareru?
doko kara hajimeru darou?
hito no hyoushi na kuni ga jibun wo horobose.
waga kuni no hate wa kokoro no mawari dake.

(first verse only in Emitare)

Maybe a gloss for Emitare and some kind of a direct re-translation for Japanese? (since it's hard to gloss)?
It just seems to me, that in Japanese the line order is somewhat different and, because I'm somewhat trying to learn the language, I'm interrested Wink

In the meanwhile (is there such an expression?), a really rough translation to Latvian:

Neviens cilvēks, nekāds ārprāts,
Lai arī kāds nebūtu viņu skumjais spēks,
Nevar iegūt, iekaŗot manas valsts sirdi,
Tie ceļas, lai ciestu neveiksmi.
Viņa ir mūžīga.
Ilgi pirms tika novilktas valstu robežas,
Kad vēl neplīvoja karogi, nestāvēja armijas,
Dzima mana zeme.

Un tu jautā, kādeļ viņu mīlu
Caur kaŗiem, nāvi un izmisumu?
Viņa ir pastāvīga, mēs, kam nerūp.
Un tu brīnies, vai viņu pametīšu? Bet kā?
Es ceļoju pāri robežām, bet vēl joprojām esmu tur.

Kā gan varu viņu pamest?
Kur gan es sāktu?
Lai cilvēku nevērtīgās valstis pašas sevi sagrauj!
Manas zemes vienīgās robežas ir ap manu sirdi.

I think it's "in the meantime", but I've also heard people say "in the meanwhile" or even just "meanwhile"... A matter of preference, I suppose. Wink

'In the meanwhile' sounds fairly unnatural to my ears, but the other two are fine. (I would expect 'in the meanwhile' to be a product of confusing the other two; since they're basically interchangeable, someone's bound to accidentally say both at once.)

Sure ^_^
The Japanese is mildly archaic, since it seemed appropriate somehow. (Archaism in Japanese has a COMPLETELY different connotation than in English.)
(I'll gloss the Japanese too, I'll just use a lot of (whatever = whatever).)

(some fixes in the Emitare, just so it's actually 'no flags flew', not 'flags didn't fly')

In both the Japanese and the Emitare I flipped the first two lines (because sticking a whole clause inbetween the subject and the verb doesn't seem right in Japanese, and in Emitare the verb comes first so it's either that or part of the third line becomes the first).
In the Japanese I split the third line because the verbs take objects in two different cases, and in the Emitare it just seemed better to split in two.

I don't know if these translations are any good. If anyone can correct my mistakes, please do! I'm sure there are many.

Come ne posso partire?
Dove comincierei?
