So you use 'gates' and 'doors' even if there's only one physical object?
(Then again, we use 'pants' and there's only one physical object.)

Yeah, that was what I noticed immediately ^_^ |

Yeah, exactly, there is only one physical "door", but we use it in the plural, because.. I don't know why, there just is no other way
Well, the thing with pants and glasses is that one can, in fact, imagine them as a combination of two objects, thus having the use of plural make more sense, in a way
I can't really explain the gate and door thing, but it seems logical, because I'm used to it. The same way as I'm used to having every single noun have an asigned gender that has nothing to do with the thing it represents. |

True. I wonder if English does anything where it's very obviously one thing, but it uses a plural. Anybody think of one?

I wonder if "eye-glasses" count |

Yeah, you're right.
Honestly, I don't think English does that. I mean, it's weird in all sorts of ways, but this is the one quirk it has left for other languages |

This is weird for me to say but I guess you're changing the main topic... Wouldn't you really like to split this topic into 2 separate threads? _________________ Seos nivo adgene Kizne tikelke

We could do that, but basically we already finished (I think) the offtopic, so we can just get back to football (soccer).
Who do you think/want to win the Cup? |

I was hoping for Japan, but that didn't happen (and I wasn't expecting it really); now I'm more interested to see who wins rather than rooting for any particular team. |

Brazil lost to Netherlands? I find it kinda weird, since I had the impression that Brazil is like the God of football |

Not if Dunga is the coach... Something similar happened to Argentina and Maradona... _________________ Seos nivo adgene Kizne tikelke

Well, Netherlands won, Uruguay goes home. Would Spain do the same as Uruguay did today? Who knows, but I guess that's exactly what we'll be witnessing tomorrow night (afternoon for me). _________________ Seos nivo adgene Kizne tikelke

Well, I guess Paul, a sea creature that lives in Oberhausen aquarium, knows more about football / soccer than I or many people do...

I vote for Netherlands, just because.
But actually, I liked the way Spain played against Portugal, so, I don't really care

I'm kind of annoyed Spain lost, but that goal was excellent. I'm just glad it didn't go to a shoot out. It seems Krake Paul was right again though.
Oh, and to answer an earlier question:

I thought you'd say Netherlands... They lost, not Spain.
Man, that was the worst final match in the FIFA world cup history, too many fouls, too many yellow cards but just a single red card... That's unfair, about half the players should have been banned for the rest of their careers. Even the Spanish "scorer" should have seen a red one several minutes before he could score in the second extra half time.
The match for the third place was more like a true final match. Sadly the Uruguayans couldn't score at the end of the game during that free kick. _________________ Seos nivo adgene Kizne tikelke

I feel a little bad for Netherlands - 3 times in the final and always lost.
On the other hand, first win for Spain, that's always nice |
