I want to make a script, that works the way hangul does, but at the same time isn't just an adaptation of the actual Korean script. (Basically because it would make no sence whatsoever to use it in my conworld). The thing is, the actual hangul script is genious enough in it's simplicity to discourage any attempts to make an alternative.

So, basically, I'm stuck.

Anyone has an idea, how to help me? Did I even explain my problem clearly enough?

I think the two main aspects of Hangeul are the syllable building-blocks and the systematically-modifiable letters (i.e. /k/ is basic, add a line and you get /kh/, etc).

Seems like that wouldn't be too hard to recreate differently. If the conlang in question has a syllable structure other than Korean's CVC then it would end up looking a whole lot different too.

Oh, I didn't mean advanced hangeul (is this the right spelling?), but more like hangeul for newbies, like myself Very Happy

Anyways, what I did is this - I dramatically decreased the amount of vowels, so, although the representation manner is the same, the correspondence differs. For example, I use hangeul i for my a, hangeul u for my o and some other combination lines that look like hangeul vowels but aren't. Also, I toddled around with the consonant shapes - I kept the basic ones, but again, I changed the correspondence and put in some others (also stealing katakana's ム and マ).

I wish to ask if you think my choice of vowels and consonants is naturalistic or not, but I guess this is not the right place for that. OTOH, I don't want to start a new thread just right away... Oh, decisions, decisions...

Well I don't think I've made what you're requesting but I have played with the Hangul script quite a bit.

As for making a conscript that works like Hangul I don't think I've done that but it's tempting. The closest I can give you of mine is the Asugabili scripts which stack letters on each other to make characters.

I know I have examples somewhere on here I'll have a looksie for you.

I guess that naturalistic factor would depend rather on what kind of people they are. Maybe they're some sort of Korean Japanese descendants that might mix both writing systems, being Hangul the predominant one. Or they're former nomads that just adapted scripts from ancient cultures without knowing how they actually worked long time ago and caused that they just made up their on derivative writing system based on those 2.

Well, my conpeople live in a separate universe, so I don't see how could it possibly happen without inter-world travel, which, for that matter, I DO NOT plan to have Wink

I mean, you can use that as examples of how that could have happened, maybe you would just make them look more fantastic by not using those gentilics but weird ones and make up a clash theory to explain why they don't use as many (of what we know as) Japanese symbols / syllables as Korean ones. I think that could help you in case that you want to make sure people will understand why they use such a mix that on first sight doesn't seem to match. Of course, that's just my opinion nothing else.
