Who of you know of natlangs and/or conlangs that have:
an /i/ phoneme contrasted with two or more of the phonemes /i:/ or /ij/ or /ji/, and also contrasting two or more of /i:/ or /ij/ or /ji/ phonemes with each other:
or
a /u/ phoneme contrasted with two or more of the phonemes /u:/ or /uw/ or /wu/, and also contrasting two or more of /u:/ or /uw/ or /wu/ phonemes with each other?
And which natlangs and which conlangs?
And how do they indicate the difference in writing? _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |

Swedish distinguishes between /i/, /i:/, and /ji/:
/ilä/ illa "bad"
/i:lä/ ila "haste"
/jilä/ gilla "like"
It also distinguishes between /u/ and /u:/, but not the others. Swedish doesn't have /w/.
/hun/ hon "she"
/hu:n/ hon "the sink"
(Though /ji/ is biphonemic, not monophonemic.) |
