There was a difference, but not that difference (ぢ = /J\i/, じ = /Zi/ (I think)). Then they merged to /J\i/, and then ディ /di/ came from English.

Originally ぢ may have been /di/, but it was long gone by the time English came in.

Japanese is (AFAIK) ~50% from Chinese, IDK how much (prolly like 10 or 20%) from English. That's still only 70% though.
