Well, I'm going to try to translate a short story I wrote a few months ago. It's 2500 words, and has already been translated by myself (with lots of help from a friend) into Spanish.

First I'm going to attempt the translation into Ÿlärà, to get the grammar solidified, continue the wordbuilding and general feel for the language.

I'll do Áërt second, as I've already done some decent amount of translation into it, and I don't think I'd be able to do much more grammar work from this.

I'll post the story here if anyone wants to try this with me. It's about two autistic twins in a mental institution, and their struggle to reach people as they have difficulty expressing themselves verbally. I did some research before finalizing the story, and borrowed some ideas from real people.

So far I have the titles ( Wink ):

English: Emergence Labeled Autistic
Áërt: Jreëm sligeloaad ýcaadest /dʒrɛjim slɪgɛloɒd ʌɪcadɛst/
Ÿlärà: Äjëovỳ ÿs lỳgelodè aicädÿs /ɒɣjiov ɪs lɪgɛlod ʌɪcɒdɪs/
(yes, the lexicon for Áërt and Ÿlärà is very similar - most of the words are just spelled differently, but some are genuinely derived differently, due to some of the grammatical rules Ÿlärà has.)

EDIT: wow, some of the derivational words coming out of this are amazing! I already have multiple words for 'imaginary friend' (not actually in the story, but hey); and a word for delusion. I also discovered a new 'praiseful' term that could be used by my conculture (which has no solid form as of yet but of which I have some ideas). And I found I didn't even have a word for 'young' though I do have 'narcissist' (I'm sure I spelled that wrong).

I'm not sure what you mean by "try this with me" but I'd love to see it! Very Happy I often translate little story things I've written into my conlangs as well, but none of them are decent enough to post on the forum, haha. I hope it helps you develop Ÿlärà!

Would that be the translated version or the original? Or both? Can I have both? Very Happy

I'll email a copy of the translated story to everyone interested once it's done. Be forewarned, the Spanish translation took nearly a month (with double checking etc), and that's for something I knew decently well (or at least, didn't have to gloss it before translating it Wink )

Another interesting thing that's come out of the translation so far: three 'o's in a row :S

oóòmbálá (he appears [to be]) /oʊu:əmbele/

I've only done 180 words of translation so far Sad I need to pick up the pace Arrow

I have done the first 72 words. >_< I should also pick up the pace. Hahaha. =D

15th August - I am now up to 251 words, only about a tenth done. Haha. >_<

16th August - It's not 451 words left. So yeah, still a long way to go.

17th August - I was too busy to do any. =(

18th August - 757 words. =D ^___^ So yeah, almost there, I guess. 1731 words left to go. Haha.

Well, I've been away at Warped Tour (awesome!) so of course I did not do any translating but I will make up for it tomorrow, and will again lag behind as I am camping for four days the day after.

But again, good luck to all participating and thanks for your interest!

Wow, nice.

I would do the story, but it seems (from the title) like it would have a lot of words not used in this era of Emitare.

I need to get workin' on Modern Emitare....

Just wondering, how did you work with the numbers, ie what does your number system look like? Mine's base-25, so I had to use letters, and I had to convert each number but it's working pretty well.

Is that a generic 'how does your number system work?' question?

Emitare uses base 8.

I'm done! Very Happy Very Happy Your 5-page story became 3 pages in Hemnälg... Laughing

Hemnälg numbers are... well, sort of base-10, but above 11 they're divided into 11s, but then... it's weird. Shocked I'm going to post numbers, irregular and colloquial verbs, and dialectal differences on Hemnälg sometime this week.

I'll email you my translation then! Do you want the gloss (the really messy and supremely bad gloss, that is) as well?

Shocked Shocked Wow that was fast!!

Yeah, Ÿlärà is shorter than English as well, around 80% as lengthy, it seems. However, I'm still only ar 350 words right now, so yeah... Since I haven't been working on conlangs very long, I don't have the vocabulary yet, especially colloquial or phrasal. But it will be done!

I would definitely like a gloss as well, as sticky as it may be Wink I'm separating every phrase from the translation in the gloss, for a better idea of why each order is the way it is, etc.

I had to come up with a decent amount of vocab as well. Some basic stuff like "move" I didn't have yet! Shocked I could've sworn I had that one at least...

As for the gloss, I pretty much have the translation in the top three pages (and it really is exactly three pages! (^_^) Funny how that worked out) and then the gloss a couple spaces underneath it. I'll send that to you, and if it makes your eyes burn to look at it I can divide it up, I don't know, line by line maybe. Wink

Good luck! Very Happy

"move" - yeah, I still don't have some really basic vocab; however the feel I'm going for for the speciality vocab is a culture based around change, movement, evolution, etc. So there's lots of words for those (even separate verbs for change, and movement).
