I will not be here this next week (starting today, I probably should have posted this sooner). I am going to the National Junior Classical League national convention in Sacramento to show off m4h m4d L4t1n sk1||z.

I need to go next year. I wasn't able to make it to the JCL convention this year.

I am back! I was under the impression that we got back tomorrow, so I'm a bit earlier than I anticipated, but whatever.
I'll wait to brag until I have everyone's consent.

I am SO FREAKING TIRED.

Alright then, my report.

[brag]
All of these are scores as graded against my fellow Latin II students (with one notable exception).

15th place - Roman History (there's probably a bunch of other under-10th ones, this is the only one I remember)
7th place - Latin Literature (which was a bit miraculous, or everyone else in level 2 knows even less than I do)
6th place - Latin Vocabulary
6th place - Greek History
5th place - Ancient Geography
3rd place - Academic Heptathlon (a conglomeration of 7 categories)
3rd place - Reading Comprehension level 2 (as part of a 14-way tie O_o - let's just say it's a popular test)
1st place - Greek Derivatives
1st place - Latin Derivatives (both of which are consistent with my interest in historical linguistics)
1st place - Intermediate-level Open Certamen (I will explain in a bit)
1st place - Advanced Grammar level 3. I took the wrong test (for legitimate reasons!). Initially they threw the test out because I was the wrong level, but my teacher (who is amazing) got them to grade it anyway and I got 1st as graded against level 3 students. (And I was half-asleep the whole test!)
[/brag]

Certamen is a kind of quiz-game thing involving buzzers, where the moderator reads the question and a player (on a team of 4) buzzes in when they know the answer. It's pretty competitive in Competitive Certamen - the early buzzes are mind-blowing sometimes*. There are three levels, Novice for Latin I students, Intermediate/Lower for Latin II, and Advanced/Upper for III and up. Our novice team (3/4 were from my school) got 3rd in nationals, Texas's intermediate team (which was from San Antonio) won, and our upper team (also from here in Austin) got 4th. (My school's intermediate team failed in the regional finals. It was stupid.)
Anyway, I played on open certamen, which is where you just sign up, and get assigned a random team. It is FUN - we spent two rounds laughing our heads off at/with the moderator.
The one thing that sucks is that if we want to win nationals officially next year, not only will nationals be as hard as nationals, but state will be as hard as nationals (since the winning lower team will be in our division next year again), and even regionals will be as hard as nationals (we'll have to play at least part of that 4th-place upper team). .

*Most freakish early buzz ever: at an unofficial practice-certamen session last year, one of the guys who was part of the winning intermediate team this year got this:
"Who was the first Gree-" BEEEP "Protesilaos." "That is correct."
It was scary. I had to ask what the question actually was.

That sounds AWESOME. Makes me wish Calgary had a Junior Classics League (or whatever you call it).

That would be awesome. If only - we could meet at the next nationals! They're in North Dakota. (Yeah. Fargo, North Dakota. Yay?)
Ontario was mentioned, and British Columbia sent some people with Washington, but there are very, very few Canadians involved. I'm kinda lucky - Texas is the biggest delegation, they sent 270 people. I think the next down had like 100 (either California or Florida, and Virginia has 80-something). Smallest was Kansas - 2 people!

*nods vigorously*
It's become an in-joke among us.

I'm totally doing this next year - this sounds like fun. How many people compete in Latin V? In Latin IV?

In IV it's significantly less, in V I have no idea, but it would have to be very much less since probably a lot of people in Latin IV are seniors and can't keep going.

And it is fun ^_^
I'm happy because next year's state convention is like 5 minutes from my house.

I might be in IV or V next year, and if there aren't many maybe I'll win.

How good do you have to be at Area F to go to state?

In certamen, pretty good. Otherwise, anyone can go - there's no restriction. Even going to nationals is open to anyone, the official certamen players just get registration and stuff paid for.

Wow, you'll be in IV or V next year? I'm only going to be in III...

Hmm, maybe I'll go to nationals.

And where is next year's state convention? What school?

Hey, I know where that is! That's 30 minutes from my house, though. Is Area F at the same place?

I don't know where the Area F convention is this year. It'd be cool if it was there too, though.
