I've started work on a new conworld. It's going to be one of those so-major-it-consumes-much-of-your-life projects (on the scale of Zompist's Almea). At least hopefully. I'm going to try to make it as absolutely realistic as possible, to the degree of my ability to do so. It's also open to anybody else who wants to work on it, since doing it myself would take ages.

World map is here. I did it with a fractal map generation program, since at least it's better than anything I could have done.

I'm focusing on this area here (south of westernmost continent).

Map of potential use of land, around equivalent of 4500bc here. Dark green is rainforest agriculture or hunting/gathering, light green is farming, orange is herding, grey is dry-area hunting/gathering, and white is unusable (deserts and mountains).

Map of general linguistic divisions at the same time. I have names and general ideas about the labeled ones, and none about the unlabeled ones. (They're all completely different families with only contact-induced similarities, though I might make the purple and brown ones be two distant branches of something similar.)

I'm going to just start at the beginning and work my way along as much as I can. I have some ideas about the future but not much.

External input is welcome, if not unashamedly sought.

I like it.
I don't have more to say at the moment; sorry.
I've been sick the 20th until the 22nd. So I guess I just missed it on the 19th. Sorry, again.
No, not in a coma. But speaking only for myself -- in bed, mostly.

I like what you have so far, especially the detailed maps. What program did you use for those? Since you're accepting help, I'd like to contribute some concultures to it.

Ouch, hope you get better.

It's a fractal mapping program called Fractal Terrains. It's not free, but it's worth the money if you can figure out how to get realistic climate data. (It took some time.) For the modified maps I just used an image editing program.
Feel free to contribute cultures, just pick an area other than mine and I can give you more detailed maps and stuff.

The maps are really nice! And I wish you luck on this wonderfully fascinating project, I'm sure there will be ups and downs, but persevere!

It has so much potential. ^_^

Thanks SM!

Currently at -4000 (=4500bc, basing dates off an event I have planned far in advance), here. Cities are in blue, but they won't be marked again on these maps until I start doing city-only maps around -500.

I'd like some suggestions to make the brown and purple lang families unique so I can finish naming stuff for my -2000 map. (I don't know why, but my brain isn't coming up with uniqueness ATM.)

Well, since you're working in the south of the west continent, I could take the northern side. Or at least part of it. I'll have details on the cultures I'm contributing soon.

That'd be great. If you can edit the map image with like a circle or something around the area you want, I can PM you more detailed maps and stuff.

You might want to go with somewhere else though, the vast majority of that area is desert (the yellow stuff is desert). You could go with the farthest western peninsula-thing, but it's kinda small.

OK, here I've marked the areas that I want to use. I've decided to have that green peninsula for one culture and put the others in the middle continent to the east.

So, the green peninsula over in the west will the inhabited by various Gaupic tribes all speaking various dialects of Proto-Gaupic (A.K.A. Gaupasa.)There may also be a more distantly related (or perhaps entirely unrelated) language spoken on the islands off it's west coast.

As for the central-western continent, I am planning to have at least two semi-nomadic groups inhabiting the area, one of which will be the Drumu.

Marte is another language I'm planning to use, though I'm not sure where. It has been shown in the "guess how to pronounce this section, though that is an early version subject to drastic change.

Just wanted to let you know that I have NOT given up on my contributions to this project.

Oh, this thread. Razz I thought it had died, so I might want to update real quick.

I've shifted my focus to the central part of the eastern continent, the horizontal bit from yellow to yellow. (I realized that this is the area most suited to quick civilization growth due to it's east-west axis (thx Jared Diamond!).) Since the project itself is far from dead, I'll post some other maps 'n stuff tomorrow.

Also, any suggestions on branch langs from PKM are welcome. Emitare's going fine (I've got future plans for it), Kisjire is another one I'm planning and I've got some ideas for it, but the rest are so far nonexistant. They're going to be grouped under 'Manyari' and take a whole lot of influence from that 'give me ideas for this lang' lang I posted about earlier, but from there I don't have many ideas.

So, do you mean that the Kilhiryui and Barathan cultures/langs are relocating there? Or just that you're shifting focus to different ones in that area?

If you are relocating, should I also move my contributions eastward?

Yeah, PKM and all that stuff is what's moving. I think your stuff is fine where it is, unless you want to move.

It just seems more logical to have the first few cultures near each other. If we started with the areas on either side of a culture empty, then put cultures in them later we might have to go back and change history to account for things like war or linguistic influence. That and the areas I have right now are a bit small.

That might be good. I'm developing all of the cultures within my area and expecting not much interaction with cultures outside of it for quite some time (with one big exception). You could take that big green north-south area on the west side of the same continent - it's close enough.

The big exception is that Barathan languages live generally to the east of the east edge of my area - a Mongol-esque invasion happens at one point.

Yeah, I think I'll use that area for Drumu and Marte and put Gaupasa in the eastern region of the central continent.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of people live in this conworld? Are they humans? Humanoids with slight difference? What would be the average lifespan for them?
