I would suggest to make a "conversation" thread in the Random Chat forum (if there isn't one already) ;)
:P | You're right. It should be split at about killerken's post Posted: Mon Jun 15, 2009 3:56 am and from there until the next "resources" one should be moved to Random Chat. IMO. Or something like that, IMHO.

In America, it mostly goes unnoticed. |

Well yeah, it would kinda take an awful lot of effort to go without noticing the Jāņi (John's day) in Latvia - it's the national day of getting drunk, eating cheese and having text in the ferns ("looking for the fern bloom") Many people hate this day, to be honest (aside of them, who use this chance to officially get drunk ) |

Interesting, I've never heard of that! Is Jāņi the summer soltice celebration in Latvia? If so, why is it named John's Day? |

The 4th of July is 12 days after the summer solstice.
Flag Day is 8 days before the summer solstice.
Lots of wedding days are near the summer solstice.
So summer-solstice time, if by that we mean "a week or two around the summer solstice", definitely doesn't go un-celebrated.
The day itself -- June 22 (or June 21 or whenever) -- doesn't get celebrated as "the summer solstice", though it is usually noticed.
So I disagree with T_F about it going "mostly unnoticed" in America; and I'd answer the O.P.'s question with "well, yes, in a rough sort of approximate way, it does get celebrated." _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |

I certainly celebrated the solstice, although I was alone in doing so. Nobody else seemed to care much. _________________ Iwocwá ĵọṭãsák.

I was not aware of that. I know I don't generally notice it, but I guess it sort of happens to get noticed. |

I wished random people a "happy first day of summer," but I was inside playing video games most of that day so I didn't say it to many people. (^_^) I'd much rather celebrate summer than winter; though, I'm very fond of fall because of the lovely American tradition of controlling time, and we get that "extra hour" of sleep. Also I'm in school, and I like school. _________________ I have some small knowledge of:

Wait, you're in school in the summer?
*Oh, in fall. NVM.
I'd rather celebrate winter, I've lived in hot places (Arizona and Texas) for all of my life that I've been old enough to remember. I like coldness.
It's supposed to be friggin 102 F here in Austin today. (39 C) |

Actually, if they had 3rd year Japanese in the summer I'd totally be taking it right now. I'll be in school next summer, though.
That's hoooooooot... I think I would die, since I have to work outside. (^_^) Stay cool, T_F! _________________ I have some small knowledge of:

I'll do my best. I'm glad I'm not an outdoors-sportsy kind of person, I really have nothing to do outside my house. Still better than Arizona, this is like April in Arizona.

I wish I could escape indoors. My apartment faces the sun with all windows and has no air conditioner, so it's basically 95 °F / 35 °C constantly here, and even hotter if I didn't have the window blinds closed all day. Now at midnight I can at least open my window to get some cold air. |

That sucks. You don't have air conditioning? (Everywhere I've lived it's been practically necessary for survival, so I'm always surprised when I hear people don't have it.)

In Sweden. Most of my neighbours don't have it either, as far as I know. Everyone I know who has air conditioning has their own house, nobody I know who lives in an apartment has it. But it seems their apartments are cooler than mine anyway, though not as cool as those who have their own houses. But I seriously consider to get an air conditioner the next spring. |
