I can't wait! Are you continuing into your third year? It seems like it might be more practical to take a more widely "spoken" language, but I can't resist following in the Roman's footsteps, however long ago they last walked them. _________________ Speak: English, Spanish

Yup, Latin III next year. The only other lang my school offers is Spanish, and as I have said before, I really don't like Spanish. (IDK why, I just don't.) Besides, my Latin teacher would kill me if I stopped. (She's doing her best to convince me to major in classics instead of linguistics in college, but it's not working.) |

Lucky! I wish my school taught Latin. My cousin is taking Latin and Ancient Greek at university and it looks awesome. |

I had to wait until college, too Hemicomputer. My high school forced me to learn Spanish.
Tolkien_Freak, does the Classics degree include more cultural and historical stuff than pure Linguistics? I think you're making the right decision. Even though classical languages are awesome, you have more opportunities in the present with a linguistics degree. _________________ Speak: English, Spanish

Greek is fun. (Ancient as in what? Attic? Koiné? Biblical? Homeric?)
I took Biblical Greek last year (meaning the year before the year that just ended), and enjoyed every minute of it. It was tough (6 principle parts per verb), and I have forgotten almost everything I learned in it, but it was still fun.
One of my not-linguistically-inclined friends took it and barely passed. He was amazed at my consistent high 90's. |

Dang, I didn't even notice I was crossposted!
Yeah, the classics degree is more about Greece and Rome themselves - their history, languages, and literature. Since I'm more interested in languages in general, I'm going with linguistics (and thanks for agreeing with me! ....wait, that sounds weird).

That's cool. I want to take a closer look at Attic Greek. (Year-before-last my teacher loaned me the Attic Greek textbook they were using at the time. I still have it (I am absolutely terrible about returning books - I'm a horrible person )
AFAIK, Biblical Greek is just about one or two hundred years after the official 'Koiné' point, and is spoken with some slight Aramaic flavoring. |

My main problem with Attic Greek is limited practice.

TF:
E Nomine is a German... I think they call themselves a "monumental dance" group or something. To me they sound techno. Here's links to the wiki page, and to two of my favorite songs. The MVs are kind of cheesy but I mostly just listen to the music. (^_^) It's mostly in German, but then the choir singing the chorus switches to Latin.

And, are you in the Junior Classical League or anything? I've heard that's lots of fun, and they do toga parties and stuff. At least, they did at my high school. Not that I was in it actually - my friend was, though, and she seemed to enjoy herself much. _________________ I have some small knowledge of:

Nice, they're cool. I've only listened to the first one, but I'll get on to the second one soon.
(EDIT: NVM, my firewall/internet-security-thingeh blocked the other one. <_< )
Yeah, I'm going to JCL nationals this summer in Sacramento. My school's middle school certamen team is going there too, but unfortunately my level's team didn't quite do so well, so I'm just going for tests.
We've never actually done any toga parties, though. We do more the competitive stuff. |

You should totally organize a toga party. XD I think one of them (over here) was such that the participants got up in their togas (made of sheets, so some of them had weird patterns like the Little Mermaid on them) and walked around wherever the competition was being held asking for directions to Rome, and then they went around ordering Roman food in Latin and generally being silly. I think they had costume competitions too.
But, whether you throw a party or not (and you don't have to party hard, of course) I wish you good luck this summer! 頑張ってね! _________________ I have some small knowledge of:

That sounds really weird. One of the days at nationals we all have to wear togae, but me being who I am I'm really not looking forward to it. >_>
I know they have costume competitions at nationals, one of my friends is entering it. This year it's Pluto!
And thanks, 僕が頑張ってみるよ! |

I'm sure it is weird, but that's totally the way to go sometimes. Pluto sounds like a fun theme. Just for boys, or would girls give it a shot too? Hope your friend tries hard too! _________________ I have some small knowledge of:

Girls is a different category, they've got 'girls', 'boys', and 'couples'. I think Couples this year was Antony and Cleopatra, but IDK what Girls is.
I think he will, he's pretty good. I think he got 3rd here in Texas, which is a pretty active state in the JCL. |

T_F, what area JCL are you in? Are you in area F? Did you go to Westwood?
I wanted to go, but I couldn't make it this year. I'll go next year though, maybe we'll meet. _________________ Iwocwá ĵọṭãsák.

I don't want to be a fun-ruiner, but I have an idea, that this conversation has gone far from being about resourses.
I would suggest to make a "conversation" thread in the Random Chat forum (if there isn't one already)

That's probably a good idea.
@SM: When you get around to it, could you split these posts off to their own thread under Random Chat? Thx.
EDIT: lol, 555th post |
