Hello there, everyone!
I am latvian and consider myself a language-freak. I speak more or less fluent english and little bits of french, russian, german and japanese.
At the moment I'm writing a story that takes part in a conworld. There is a conlang and a conscript for it, understandably. I have already made the conlang thread. You can find it here. I believe, the rest will come in time.
I wanted to add that I simply enjoy communicating with other people from wherever they are, so feel free to ask or to chat with me! Very Happy
Have a nice day everyone!

(by the way, I seem to have a problem with uploading an avatar...)

Bahaha, I said "hi" on the "resources" thread... woops. XD I'll say "welcome" here too: Welcome! Sårrun! Liiraaən! Mörhs inthlwn!

I wrote a bunch of questions at your conlang... hope you don't mind! (^_^) It looks interesting.

「ようこそ」ともう言ったが、また言う。ようこそ!
(If my conlang was far along enough to have a welcome phrase I'd put it here, but it doesn't.)

What's Latvian like as a language? (I guess that's a weird question, but whatever.)

Thanks everyone for the greetings! I'm glad to be here, because for a year or so I thought I'm weird, but I see that I'm not the only one Very Happy

TF (may I call you like that?), I personally like Latvian. I think it has a beautiful sound. But for foreigners Latvian is hard as hell. The pronunciation. Oh, the grammar - it's the worst. I don't dare to say any other language is hard after knowing Latvian Smile
(and it wasn't a weird question at all!)

Come to think of it... Vaijerīna doesn't have a welcome frase either! Very Happy Well, that can be fixed... Very Happy

How about you, guys, where are the majority of ya'all from?

I'm from Texas.

For me it's not the level of difficulty involved in learning a language, it's the way it works. How's Latvian work? It's probably mostly Indo-European, so what quirks and stuff does it have?
(If you can't tell I'm trying to decide if I'm interested in learning Latvian. I don't really have a reason other than 'it's one of those languages that you never really hear about, but there are enough people speaking it that it's not completely useless. What little I've heard of it sounds cool.)

Oh, so you want me to advertise? Ok.. Very Happy
Well it's the Baltic branch and said to have a lot common with the sanskrit, but I don't really care about that part.
In grammar it's that practically every word in the sentence has different cases depending on the time, gender, numbers and tense, and the annoying part is that it practically differs from wort to word. Of course there is SOME system under it, but well, you have to look VERY carefully Very Happy
Phonetically Latvian has some interesting sounds and so-called sound changes, which I have no idea how to write in IPA Very Happy

Any specific info you wish to know?

Sounds interesting. I'll look more into it.

The problem is IDK where to start. (I'm trying to avoid really open-ended questions because I personally can't stand them, but I am failing miserably.)

Lemme guess:

Kiri, kur dzīvo? Dzīvoju Teksasā.
kiri, where live[2sg?]? live-1sg Texas-LOC.

Woo, I know some Latvian now!

(Out of curiosity, what are your other top 2 IE langs?)

Slovene and Luwian.

And T_F is exactly right.

I know Slovene is Slavic (so I know something about it), but I know absolutely nothing about Luwian other than it's in the Anatolian family, which I also know nothing about.

Is there or is there not the -2sg morpheme on/in dzīvo? I would guess there is, but IDK (since live-1sg is dzīvoju).

I'm pretty sure the absence of anything except the theme vowel implies second person singular.
The third person (singular and plural) is formed the same way.

So they look the same? A 3rd person verb looks like a 2nd person verb with a subject? (Or a 2nd person verb looks like a 3rd person verb without a subject?)

I wish Vreleksá was this busy more often.

Yay, a lingvistic talk about Latvian in English! And full of weird terms! NICE! Smile Quite a lot to comprehend for a *khem*year-old...

Anyhow.
Aeet, es dzīvoju Rīgā. Cik labi tu runā latviski?

TF, "homonym" is the synonym of "Latvian" Very Happy

dzīv-o-t
live-suffix-INF

dzīv-o
live-2SG / live-3SG / live-3PL

dzīv-o-ju
live-suffix-1SG.PRS / live-suffix-1SG.PST

I could agree or disagree, but I have no idea what you just said Very Happy

Razz

That explains it.

Meaning just dzīv-o, not dzīv-o-something. (o is the theme vowel, the vowel the consonant endings are added on to)

Oh, can I get to know, why you decided to learn Latvian?

I guess you will want me to fix your mistakes.
You said:
I speak evil - I started learning in week earlier.

You wanted to say (I suppose):
I speak badly - I started learning last week,
which would be,
(Es) runāj-u slikt-i - sāku māc-ī-ties pirms nedēļ-as
(1SG) speak-1SG.PRS badly-ADV - start-1SG.PST learn-suffix-REFL.INF before week-GEN

EDIT: so, the thing I have so far put as "suffix" is called a theme vowel or smth? Very Happy
