Hey, I am very new to all this linguistic stuff, such as grammatical cases, and all the other complicated stuff (that i can't think of at the moment), since my first conlangs were just based upon dutch, german, french and russian (only really changed the vocab, nothing else). So could someone help me out, and I have tried looking at it on wikipedia, but its all greek to me. Sad

If anyone could help out, thanks.

Heh, I'm probably not going to be of much help because I'm more of a conworlder/culturer. But I am sure some of our very talented linguists like halyihev and tsiasuk-pron will be able to help us.

I've been at this for quite a while (30+ years at this point...) so I might be of some help.

As a very beginning place, I'll point you at the Language Construction Kit (http://www.zompist.com/kit.html. This is a general description of stuff that's useful to know and think about when starting a conlang.

I should point out that, in my opinion, it's possible to create a perfectly good conlang without following the kit, or by only following parts of it. But, it's at least something that'll give you the kinds of stuff to think about, and some terminology, so you'll have an idea where to go from ground zero, so to speak.

Beyond that, feel free to ask questions. I'm on this board, conlanger.com, and the ZBB, though I'm less involved on all of them than I have been at times (spending more time on my own language...).

And welcome! Very Happy

For my conlang that I am doing with my sister, we began with basic things such as sentence structure, adjectives, tenses, pronouns (both direct and indirect).... etc. Well basically, here is a list of all the things I included:

Demonstrative Adjectives: this, that, these, those
Comparatives: bigger, smaller
Superlatives: biggest, smallest
Plurals: English ('s) Korean (ga)
Adverbs: Quickly, slowly
Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it
Refelxive Pronouns, myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself
Question words: What, where, when why
Conjunctons: and, but, if, because
Word order: SOV/OVS/SVO
Articles: definite-the, indefinite-a
Adjectives: nice, big, tall
Direct object pronouns: me, you, him, her ,it
Indirect object pronouns: to me, to you, to him
Date and time
Negatives
Numbers: Ordinal, fractions, nominal(I believe that is what its called)
Present tense
Preterite/Past tense
Imperfect Tense
Perfect Tense
Future Tense
Imperative Tense
Mythic Tense
Hopeful Tense
Suffixes
Prefixes
Circumfixes
Declension: Equative, Inessive, Dative, Genitive
Correlatives
Gerunds
Particple Adjectives
Decimals
Negative Numbers
Addition
Subtraction
Multiplication
Division
Phoneme Inventory
Syllable structure
Stres
Infixes

And that is pretty much it, you don't need to include all of these things, you may want to add some other stuff, it's you're own conlang, do whatever you wish! ^_^

BTW, the list is not in any particular order.

I never realised how much I had done till I saw that list. Quite pleased. Right now, I have around 1600 words in the lexicon and it is still growing.

I know how you feel. The only people I know that share this interest with me are you guys.

When I go off to college in two years I'm going to major in linguistics, so maybe I'll get lucky and meet someone. Until then, I'm on my own.

At my middle school a year ago, I had a few friends and a teacher who were interested in conlanging, but now I'm in high school, and nobody else here is cool enough for our superior hobby.

Uwaaughagh you all must be geniuses. (^_^) I'm going to be a junior in college this fall... though, I did start making my first language when I was 12. It never turned into anything, haha. Wish I could do as cool stuff as you young people. Wink

Oh, and, when is your birthday? I'll wish you a happy one when it rolls around. Very Happy Unless that's personal information that shouldn't be divulged on a public forum. Rolling Eyes

I can't seem to discern the difference between info that can be posted and info that can't. I'm probably just better off saying 'today's my birthday' on that day.

I started my first conlang in 7th grade (...I was.... 12 too, I guess), but I am still thoroughly embarrassed by it.

When you say that you sound like you're 70 ^_^

Lucky. The closest I've ever come is my Latin teacher, who is currently trying everything in her power to convince me to become a classics major instead of a linguistics one. It's kind of annoying, she's awesome in every way except that. She's probably the only person I really know who's interested in language to any really significant degree.

I attend the same school as this forum's mr.toast2 (who hasn't been around much lately) and know a few phrases in his conlang. We first started in grade four (we're in grade 9 now), although it was basically just a relex. I remember on the way to music class we would galavant down the halls shouting "fangrong stekati!" ("time for music!") Laughing

I just turned 20 in April.

You're very lucky to be around people with enough interest to work with you on conlangs and stuff. I really wish I'd had at least one friend like that. (^_^) I try to tell people, "so I've decided to change the consonant /b/ to a bilabial trill in this language I made up... do you know what a bilabial trill is? How about a normal trill?" Laughing Hahaha.

Heh, I hardly know you, Hemicomputer, but somehow I can picture you galavanting down the halls. XD
