I'm just curious about this because it's something that would actually take a lot of time to compose or translate and would require you have a lot of persistance and dedication to such project.

We already have an example on this subforum, but are there any other attempts to have a whole holy book written or translated in your 'lang?

I wrote a few passages of the Lorošae holy book Inestel Manace, which contains chants, and I'm in the process of writing an epic poem for the Jenns.

Again, could we see some examples? The chants sound very intriguing, I like chanting in other languages.

I haven't yet decided whether Adpihi ought to have a Holy Book. I've got reasons for thinking "yes" and others for thinking "no".
Adpihi religion is both fragmented and cohesive; everyone thinks they have the same religion: But there are differences, (not so great as to make them think otherwise), and there are so many possible ways to differ that most people have at most a few other people that agree with them on "everything".

I think Reptigan ought to have a constitution, which should at the same time be an "organic treaty", that is, a treaty which is fundamental and foundational for Adpihi, in the same sense that a constitution is an "organic law". And it should deal -- sparingly and limitedly, but still -- with religion; specifically it should say that no one can have a religious duty to "oppress" other religions.

I haven't written any of that yet, not even in English.

Can constitutions count as Holy Books? The American one seems to.
I don't really intend to ever write a holy book, but I do intend to write a constitution.

If you do have a holy book (no matter, imaginary or written), how do you form a name for it? Does it just mean "Book" or "Holy Book", or does it (the name) have a different meaning?

Clearly I think so for purposes of this thread. Whether I think so in general is a lot less clear; I lean towards "no". But in the sense meant by the O.P. I think the answer is "yes", that is, a constitution or organic law or organic treaty is sufficiently important to the conculture to include along with Holy Scripture. Things like the Code of Hammurabi or the Ten Commandments would probably count.

This is an important question. I'm learning American Sign Language in church, and how we're taught to sign "the Bible" would obviously not go over in an interfaith setting; it decodes as "Jesus's book". How would we sign the Hebrew Bible? "Tanak" or "Torah (law) and Nebiim (prophets) and Kethubim (writings)" would probably be best; maybe "law-prophet-writing" or something. Calling it "the Old Testament" won't do, because to them it's the (only) Testament.

What about the Samaritan Bible? What about the "third testament" faiths, to wit Islam and Mormonism?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Law" or "Fundamental Law" or "Organic Law" would be good, or good for part of it. "Common Law" might also be good, depending on history.

"Holy (or Sacred) Book" or "Holy (or Sacred) Writings" or "Holy (or Sacred) Scripture" might also be good.

Or maybe just "the Classics"?

Well, that wasn't exactly what I meant, but depending on your (con-)society it might be correct or not.

That sounds more like the 80's or 90's classics hahaha.

Well, what I did with the Tasshayan holy scripture, is that I took a bit of an Islamic aproach and now it is called Riënthaxei, which means something like "he has tought" Smile

I wonder if any conworld has an unholy book... not just a forbidden book but one that would make people destroy life because of its dark teachings.

Interesting topic - 'Does your conworld have a Necronomicon?'

I meant like the Chinese "Five Classics".
Shakespeare, Plato, Euclid, the Harvard "Five Foot Shelf", and a few other collections, count as "classics", I think, in the sense I meant.
The thing is; a consociety might call their "'Holy' Book" something like "the Classics" rather than "the Holy Book".

That's good, I think.

Yes, that is interesting. And if it does, have you written it? Did someone in their conculture write it, or translate it from some other conculture? And would it be part of their "classics", or instead mostly unknown except by rumor?

Hope to revive this thread as I think it would be a really cool project!

I do plan to translate some moralist philosophy I've been writing; not entirely sure yet if the format of the language is entirely appropriate to the style of writing though.

Of course the philosophy manuscript isn't done yet either, but it's much further along than the Formal Grammar of the language!

Anyone else?

Well, I'd love to see it, when it's done.

I haven't made any progress on my own conculture's Holy Book.

I have started collecting some proverbs, though.

I'm currently working on the Tashayan creation myth... I'm writing it in Latvian though. I will have to make a Tashayan version at some point, just to see what works and what doesn't...

I'll probably translate a few pages from a philosophy manuscript I'm working on; don't know how well it will turn out at this point as 1) the manuscript isn't done and 2) the style of the language may not match that of the manuscript.

Haven't heard from anyone else about this thread since sometime in 2013.
Should we just all assume it's a dead thread?
Too bad if so; I liked the earlier posts, before my last previous post.
