@ mr.toast2: It has to do with the way the script was originally written. The non-dominant hand would draw lines, while the dominant made the markings. When the script evolved to use one hand, people were so used to it that they kept the writing directions the same. Regarding the smudge issues, many natural languages are written R-to-L and it is not an issue. Gholkhux typically uses a very dark sort of pencil anyways.
If brush, pen, pencil, quill, or stylus is used, to write in ink or paint, or to indent on clay or wax tablets, right-handers tend to write left-to-right so that the hand will not smudge the most-recently-made marks, which tend to be the most smudgeable.
But, if writing is done by carving, especially if a hammer and a chisel are used, the chisel tends to be in the non-dominant hand and the hammer in the dominant hand; so right-handers tend to write right-to-left, so that the chisel-hand won't obscure what has just been written.
In any case, any writer, whether right-handed or left-handed, tends to write from top to bottom, so that the arms and hands will not obscure what has already been written.

I'd imagine your conscript would allow a person to write boustrephedon style, alternating writing-directions with alternate lines. Perhaps this would be done only for artistic effect, or by young people trying to "look cool". But it could be done, I think.

I think for right-handers using ink or pencil or one of those other smudgeable one-handed writing techniques, the ideal writing direction would be top-to-bottom within left-to-right, like this:
Code:

A  F  K  P  U
B  G  L  Q  V
C  H  M  R  W
D  I  N  S  X
E  J  O  T  Y

Yes, exactly what I was getting at.

How do readers tell which writing direction is meant?
It can be important....

It may not be visible, but I have indicated such a mark within the character set. The ones that look like sideways crosses, pointing either left or right, are used to indicate direction. They are placed over the first two characters and can be seen in the sample as well.

Although, now that I think about it, it does make less sense the way I have it. I think I'll either reverse what I have (making it "Lefties R-to-L, Righties L-to-R"), or make it boustrephedon.

That seems to make sense.

Oh, yeah, those two in the last line on the page. I see them now. I needed to blow your photo up to 150% to see them right, but I suppose a well-practiced native reader wouldn't have to.
You also have beginning-of-word, end-of-word, beginning-of-sentence, and end-of-sentence marks.

You had to blow the photo up? I can see them fine on my computer, maybe something went odd.

Anyways, I am also going to simplify a lot of the characters to make them quicker to write. The set on this thread is now the decorative form.

I am also considering revising or removing the rolled r character.

That could be something to consider. I do agree, I don't see why it had to be enlarged to see the directional markings. I could see them fine.

Anyways, I agree with what you said about making a "quicker" version, however (I know this from experience) it can sometimes be difficult keeping them fairly derivative.

It can be hard, but here I just need remove all the unnecessary dots and curls.

I'm also thinking that there will be a slightly different language used for the decorative script. Only difference would be that the words are longer and that the RR is used in place of R sometimes. Rolling my R's in words just got irritating.

I had just assumed it was because my eyes are 56 years old and yours are under 30.
