Hey,
So I'm wondering what people here do when they're not on the forum/etc - I'm going to guess Tolkein_Freak/eldin raigmore are some kind of linguist with the amazing detail they have for everything language-related.
I'm in second-year linguistics with a couple main foci (just for fun  ) at the moment:
concept-mapping and mental structure/representation of one's lexicon
machine translation and comprehension
historical/comparative linguistics
constructed/alien languages and xenolinguistics.
I guess I'm also wondering where everybody's gone - the forum's been so quiet lately... |

I'm actually a high school senior this year ^_^
IDK why I haven't been posting as much - I've been a bit more into Japanese and natlangs than conlangs recently (which kind of depresses me).
(other foci for me are history and sort of science in general - I love pretty much all of science except macrobiology and actually doing math.) |

| I'm graduating college in April, Japanese major with specialization in East Asian Studies. I crossed gen-eds with linguistics classes, but I haven't had time to take any more since last fall. And I don't post because I don't have anything to say. |

I'm a high school senior as well, being in a humanitarian class, which basically means that I have extra foreign languages and less Science (only a short course in Biology, Chemistry and Phisics over 3 years). As my foreign languages I have Japanese and French, as well as the must-have English. After that I'm probably gonna go to the uni and continue studying French.
I was kinda busy with NaNoWriMo this month, so had no time to conlang, but I am working on something that I'll show once I have more time to wrap my mind around it more. |

No, I'm a "retiree" (actually, I've been disabled since Feb 2001) and single since April 2004, so I've got nothing "better" (read, "more remunerative") to do than learn as much as I can about linguistics. But that's a pretty entertaining thing for me, so I'm not complaining.
I was a computer programmer from age 17 until age 49.
My graduate-school work was all in mathematics; my PhD dissertation, which was never submitted nor defended, was in abstract algebra.
My college major was general sciences.

I have been busy with College, as I will begin CMI (Creative Media)as a Sophomore-Junior, if God wills, next semester. I have been poorly active on my Conlang, but I intend to improve it further, ere I release it for critics/comments/feedbacks. I have also been drawing more creatures for my Conworld, and I shall post them here soon, if I can.

Yay! Finally someone else who WANTS to learn French all the way through! LOL! Normally, most people I have encountered start to learn it, but they quit because "It is too hard."

I'm taking French next term.  But then that's my last semester, so I probably won't be able to continue it for a while. I intend to study on my own once I get the basics down. |

O-oh, trust me, with a native language such as Latvian, I believe I have no right to call another language "too hard" |

Oh, trust me, the absolute lack of logic in English fades away in comparison to the horror that bears the honorable name of Latvian verb. Not to mention the excessive use of subclauses, that include a whole bunch of different laws about interpunction.
... so we've reduced ourselves to fighting over whose language is more horrible. How pathetic of us. |

What's interpunction?
And how is Latvian excessive about subclauses?

Well, let's see. There are cases where Latvian needs to use a subclause, where English could do without it in order to have a good sound. And for all subclauses you have to use some kind of punctuation, which follows an extensive set of rules Unfortunately I can't think of a good example right away. |

What are you aiming at, degree-wise? If you are interested, I go to NMSU, where the cost for tuition is of about $2800 per semester--very cheap in the Southwest, if not the cheapest. It may be slightly higher, considering that you are not in-state...

I'm at Pitt.  Personally I LOVE it here, and their linguistics program is a little difficult but I think it's quite good, if you were aiming for that. I've taken a number of classes but not enough for a minor.
Wherever any of you college hopefuls are thinking of, definitely visit if you're able. It could make all the difference in your ultimate choice. |

Linguistics. If I'm going for cheapness, UT is probably my best bet - IDK what the cost per semester is, but it's not that expensive and I already live in Austin where it is. (2800$, though, is dang cheap.)
@achemel: I am definitely planning visits. (Well, I've already been to UT's campus multiple times... SO MANY PEOPLE) |

I'm in high school. I'm not sure how the senior/junior terms work, so I'll just say that next year will be my last year of school.
I haven't been posting much because I should be studying for exams. I have been posting some because I'm not as studious as I should be...
