English:
The train won't arrive at the station today because the railway / railroad was destroyed by the earthquake recently.

Spanish:
El tren no podrá arribar hoy a la estación porque la vía férrea fue destruida recientemente por el último terremoto.

Kexyana:
Draunkande poselse lirai nin re vesha Galnas axavi Lorsgyena dens Gaenerva anvylgo kenyos.

smoke-machine neg-can-arrive-FUT today because (or by/for-what) destroy-4th PERS-PRET iron-way/-road during earth-movement last-adv recent-adv.

Please feel free to correct the English version if needed.

Is there any way to express the idea of something being destroyed earlier that day? Or is this the only way a Retafon speaker would say that?

I guess you could say "pepeto-leg-tak" (earlier today, literally "past-now-day").

Here's a swing at Japanese. TF, correct me if I'm wrong. (^_^)

鉄道は今度の地震に壊されたので、今日、電車は駅に着かない。
tetsudou wa kondo no jishin ni kowasareta no de, kyou densha wa eki ni tsukanai.
tetsudou wa kondo no jishin ni kowas-are-ta no de kyou densha wa eki ni tsuk-anai
/railroad TOP recent ATT earthquake by* destroy-PASS-PAST(ta-kei) because*, today train TOP station LOC* arrive-NEG/

Wow... that was harder than I thought.

TF, the stars are for you to correct me and put in the right names for these things... I know what I want to say but I don't know what they are! Rolling Eyes

Looks good ^_^

I'd use 最近(さいきん)instead of 今度, though, 今度 is more of 'this time' or 'next time'. (You just taught me 着く, though ^_^)

I'd gloss it a bit differently, from a Japanocentric perspective (few, if any, western grammars seem to describe Japanese the way Japanese grammars do... s weird):

tetsudou wa saikin no jishin ni kowasa-re-ta no de, kyou, densha wa eki ni tsuka-nai.
railroad TOPIC recent GEN earthquake AGENT destroy.MZ-PASS.RY-PAST.RT NOM COP.CONTINUATION (or something, maybe COP.RY since that's the same form as COP.RY-て) , today, train TOPIC station ALL(maybe? LOC might be just fine) arrive.MZ-NEG.SS.

MZ=mizenkei (negative/'unreal' form)
RY=ren'youkei (a kind of continuative form, the one -ます attaches to)
RT=rentaikei (=ATT generally, form almost always =SS except with keiyoudoushi (adjs with だ) and だ)
SS=shuushikei (uninflected form)

We're just learning the right terms for these things NOW, haha. Rolling Eyes

I thought about using 最近の but after much hemming and hawing over my dictionary I decided to go with 今度の. Although, now that I think about it again, it's possible that there was more than just one earthquake, and it wasn't necessarily the most recent one which did the destruction, so maybe 最近 would be better after all...

Quote:
earthquake AGENT

AGENT. I knew I knew the word but it was buried somewhere in the recesses of my brain... Hooray!

Wo-----w. <_<
('Bout a year ago I started writing a Japanese textbook just for fun, and these concepts come up at the very beginning. (I might show that around here a little, I need to keep working on it...))

What's your dictionary say for 今度? Jisho.org's entry is 'now; this time; next time; another time'.

^_^
I bet there's a proper abbreviation (or maybe a different word entirely) for glossing, but I was too lazy to look it up ^_^

Well, I looked at tangorin.com and compared it with my friend's 電子辞書 and, while tangorin had the same definition as jisho.org the other dictionary had examples that made me think maybe 今度 would be more appropriate.
