Fellow conlangers, I know I haven't exactly been active here in the past year, but I've been visiting and seeing what's going on, and now I will be leaving for a while. I joined the Navy back in March, and now I'm finally shipping out to basic training. I'll be gone for eight weeks, though hopefully after that I'll get my computer back and I'll be able to come conlang with you again.

It's been fun! Thanks for all your comments on the things I've shared.

Good luck and come back safe, achemel...

I've really enjoyed reading the details of your conlang and admire your level of completion and commitment!

Thanks for the well-wishes! I'm back! ^_^ Unfortunately, I will not be active here for a while yet - my father passed away on the 15th, and my next duty station is the Defense Language Institute in California, so I'll be busy taking intensive study classes. I'm sure once I settle in I'll have time to conlang again, but until then I'll come back and see what everyone else is up to.

How was Basic? Is it different in the Navy than for other services? (btw, whose Navy -- the U.S.'s?)

My condolences.

You may know my mother passed Dec. 19th 2012; she would have turned 86 y/o Jan 2nd this year, so it wasn't that big a shock for me, though it was for my sister who lived in the same town with her. It was sudden and she didn't suffer. But at her age she was already sort of expecting it, even though she was in good health.

For me the bigger shock was my ex-wife's passing Jan 5th just past; she was my daughter's mother and so now I'm a single dad, which means everything is still shook up. Again, it was sudden and she didn't suffer; but it was also totally unexpected.

If you're young enough for the Navy your dad was probably about the age of my ex, so he was probably too young to go. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sounds interesting! Let us know about it when you can. BTW which language(s) will they have you studying?

We look forward to both parts of that.

Basic (for the US Navy, yes) pretty much boiled down to getting along with people you can't stand. Yes there was a lot of exercising, but not as much as you might think, and yes there was a lot of yelling and swearing, but most of us saw pretty quickly that it was just a training tool and our division commanders were really decent people. Since we knew they weren't getting in our faces for the sake of intimidation it was easy to respect them and do what we were told. It was a good experience all told. I don't really know what the other services are like, except that Marines have 13 weeks of basic training and we only have 8, but since it's just basic training they're probably similar. I'm sure that our final test, Battle Stations, is unique to the Navy though. I'm also not allowed to talk about it. :p

I'm sorry to hear about your mother and ex-wife - I can't imagine what it was like to lose two people in such a short time. I hope you're all right, and talking to people who can relate. It helps a lot. My dad passed just a week after his 58th birthday, but from what my mom says he wasn't really aware of his surroundings.

Monterey is lovely - I have an awesome view from the barracks. It's totally different from boot camp though, so I'm still adjusting. I'll be studying Korean, but as far as I can tell my classes might not start until mid-March. We'll see.

I'm working on a conlang called lashel right now. I'd started it a long time ago, along with ra cel and tadvaradcel, but decided to revise it and expand the vocab. There are a couple samples on my deviantart account but I'll put something together to share here as well.
