Probably descendants of folks from there.
The Upper Peninsula, particularly the mining towns, has (I am told by my new Michigander neighbors!) lots of descendants of folks from places like Finland. We have whole Dutch and Polish towns (suburbs) in the Greater Detroit-Windsor Metropolitan Area. And we're (that is, Greater Detroit-Windsor is) the largest Arab town outside Arabia.
(We also have a Greektown and a Mexicantown, but those are neighborhoods in Detroit.)
But AFAIK most are third-or-later-generation USAnians; it's their grandparents (or earlier ancestors) who actually came from those countries. Maybe a lot are 2nd-generation USAnians, but, anyway, most seem to have been born here, or at least to have acquired their L1 -- Midwestern English -- here.
But where you might, in some other town, expect to see a Freemason's lodge or a Kiwanis or a Lion's Club or a Rotary Club or something like that, we seem to have buildings with Baltic countries' flags out front. _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |

@Serali;
On NPR this morning they were talking about the housing shortage for hermit crabs.
They've started using 3D printers ("fabbers") to make artificial snail-shells for them, out of either plastic or cornstalks.
(Kind of a "crabitat for hermits" instead of "habitat for humanity".)
It turns out most hermit crabs are right-"handed" and won't move into a left-"handed" snailshell.
Also when crabs grow they have to find bigger shells.
Thus the fabbers' software ability to enlarge and shrink what they're printing, and to rotate and "reflect" it, have helped out.
The researchers have their own hermit community in their own crabitat.
They are crowd-sourcing and cloud-sourcing their research, they say; they've set it up so that interested fans can propose research ideas.
I don't know what the website is, but, have you heard of this before?

But at the moment and for the nonce you're still in Austin Tatious right now, correct?
Any idea when you'll have to make your decision by?*
The beginning of February 2012, maybe?**

Indeed I am in Austin at the moment. If all goes well, I will have made my decision by December - if not, I will have to wait until February or March. _________________ Iwocwá ĵọṭãsák.

Oh. My. God.
Are you serious?! This is amazing! I haven't heard of this at all. It's also really shocking because I was always told/warned not to purchase any hermits with plastic and or painted shells because such things were not good for them.
In other words it could (and has) killed them. So this must either be some "high tech hermit safety shell" or someone (which happens waaay too often) didn't do their research.
It's amazing though. I would love to check this out further have you found out anything since this? And sorry for the insanely late reply I don't remember getting notifications and more then once the forum wasn't accessible for whatever reason.
Wonder why that is?

Serali wrote: | This is amazing! | I thought it was pretty neat too.
Serali wrote: | I haven't heard of this at all. | It was on NPR. Probably "Science Friday", though now I can't remember for sure which show.
Serali wrote: | It's also really shocking because I was always told/warned not to purchase any hermits with plastic and or painted shells because such things were not good for them. | I hadn't heard that.
But it may be that the plastic they were warning against hadn't been properly "cured" or the mix wasn't balanced and some of the chemicals that were supposed to be used up or cleaned out before it was used, weren't.
And/or, that may be why the "make it out of cornstalks" option is part of the research.
I admit I'm just guessing.

Obviously most of their crabs have survived and thriven longer than any of those you'd heard of; but they may still want to know whether the crabs are unharmed and can grow out of one shell and into the next with no ill effects.
Serali wrote: | It's amazing though. I would love to check this out further | I'd love for you to do so, and tell us!
Serali wrote: | have you found out anything since this? | No. I was waiting to hear from you.
See this search.
Also see
crabitat dropcam
Project Shellter (crowdsourced)
And there're more you can probably find for yourself pretty easily once you've looked at those.
Serali wrote: | And sorry for the insanely late reply | That's OK.

Wonder why that is? | Hmm. I don't know either. You're one of two people I would have asked! If you don't know, then I don't even know how to find out. _________________ "We're the healthiest horse in the glue factory" - Erskine Bowles, Co-Chairman of the deficit reduction commission |

I'll ask on the HCA (Hermit Crab Association) to see if they've heard of anything. Really fascinating.
Dying to get my little friends back in this house. Been too long!
