I've recently become a bit of a rail nerd (^_^'), and I've written a couple of things exploring the use of trains in conworlds.

The first is perhaps more interesting to this board -- it's set in a modern version of Emitaru, and describes a journey from a small mountain town to the capital. It was actually (awesomely enough) for a school assignment -- we were reading Sir Thomas More's Utopia, and the assignment was 'create your own utopia', but since I don't believe such a thing is possible I described Emitaru, which I think is at least a bit better than America if not perfect. There's a lot of little asides about Emitaru scattered throughout the thing.
It's here (Google Docs).

The second is maybe a bit less interesting. It's set in an alternate history involving a colonial Japan and a couple other things that you'll notice. It's a Wikipedia-style article on the high-speed rail network in Japan's former North American colony (called 日果 Nikka, as an antonym for Nihon).
It's here (Google Docs again).
I'm curious if people can guess the OTL counterparts of any of the cities mentioned there. (You don't get points for San Diego.)

I hope they're interesting ^_^

I really liked the story! Have you thought of turning into a part of something bigger? Because to me this seemed like it could be the first chapter of a longer story Wink (I for one would love to read more of that Wink )

Thank you! Yeah, I've been trying to turn it into something, but I haven't had as much inspiration. (I'm extremely bad at coming up with good plots.)
Maybe I'll finally sit down and do it one of these days.

The "I'm new here, trying to get some respect" plot;
The "I'm new here, trying to get some love" plot;
The "I'm new here, trying to survive" plot?

Also, I don't know if you have magic in your world, but maybe this works:
The "I'm new here, overwhelmed by magic" plot Very Happy

Or maybe all at once? I, for one, love complicated plotlines Smile

Also, maybe this helps: www.tvtropes.org

In a world that has dwarves and trolls and railroads, are dwarves helpful or inconvenient around trains' tunnels? Are trolls a problem for railroad bridges or in the mountains?

There's no magic. (Though that sort of thing might be fun to play around with...)

Those sound like good ideas, I'll think about them. I was almost thinking about something like 'I'm new here, trying to avoid being noticed'.

And shame on you for linking to TVTropes. (Razz)

Loved the Emitaru story, but unfortunately your notes do not show up right for me. Can you explain Emitare naming conventions? What little the main character hints at sounds fascinating.

Thanks ^_^

Hmm, the notes aren't not off to the side? Are you using a different browser?

The naming convention notes are (in order)
*'Sjiveru who is from Talhikaru'
*'Sjiveru who is a thinker'
*'Sjiveru who reads'
*'Sjiveru [who is the son] of Somidharu'

I am now ashamed Smile
Actually I liked the simple yet original naming conventions. On a worldbuilding scale though, don't you think that either way some kind of inherited surnames would come to use? (Especially in the big cities) If not - is there a psycological explanation or something to do with the thinking method of the Emitare (not sure of the correct term - the endings confuse me) people? Or am I being too nitpicky?

Also, I would love to see a more in-depth explanation of Oikariza, if you don't mind Wink

It very well could become hereditary in some places, but the Emitare people as a whole don't much like inheriting things. (They've had some bad experiences in the past with hereditary nobility and monarchy.)
(Yes, it is Emitare. ^_^)

So a historical explanation - good, good. Only remember that people tend to have a really short memory in these things, as in, it's not permanent. (Oh, I sound so patronizing that even I want to puke. Please, don't mind me and carry on with your life/work Very Happy )

It's kind of one of those 'embedded in the national consciousness' things (the story of getting rid of the monarchy is glorified pretty big, kind of like the American Revolution to Americans), so I would think it would have a fairly strong effect. I could be wrong.

They are off to the side, but I can only see about half of them, even if I scroll all the way to that side. I am using Firefox. I have never encountered this problem on Google Docs (though I hardly ever use Google Docs).

Thank you! Is Sjiveru a very common given name, like John and it's variants? I think I remember you referring to a Sjiveru who did something very significant in your world, so I can see a lot of people being named after her/him. What does the name mean, originally?

I second that!

Huh. Can you see that they're there, but just not read all of them (i.e. are they cut off by the edge of the screen)? Might be Google Docs failing to compensate for your screen resolution.

Yeah, he was one of the heroes in the aforementioned revolution against the monarchy. ATM it doesn't mean anything -- I'm toying with the idea of Emitare names just being nice-sounding nonsense words (like most English names end up being, though English names generally have etymologies in other languages), but IDK how realistic that is.

I have no choice but to do it then ^_^

Yes, that is exactly what is happening. How would I go about fixing that?

I don't know if there's much you can do, if that's the highest resolution your monitor can support. It's a problem on their end.

Sorry this is a bit later than I intended, but here's a brief overview of oikariza.
(I ended up getting sick over the weekend and didn't really feel like thinking about it.)
