Post and translate any and all quotations - the question is, how do the semantics translate, especially in incomplete references?

I'll post some when I can,

Good luck!

L'etat c'est moi! -Louis XIV

I actually don't know how to translate this one yet. It depends on if you translate it as "I am the state" or "The state, it is me!"

Have at it!

I shall return! ...to translate

Here's some quotes about war (taken from Call of Duty 3)

Quote:
"In the eyes of empire builders men are not men but instruments."
-Napolean Bonaparte

"The world is adangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."
-Albert Einstein

"Wars are poor chisels for carving our peaceful tomorrows."
-Martin Luther King Jr.

"War is eternity jammed into frantic minutes that will fill a lifetime with dreams and nightmares."
-John Cory

"What a cruel thing is war... to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world."
-General Robert E. Lee

"There is neither rank nor station nor prerogative in the republic of the grave."
-John James Ingalls

"If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may know peace."
Thomas Paine

I'll post some translations of these soon.

@Killerken: I guess 'moi' can't be translated as 'mine' here? I guess it depends on how King Lous XIV saw himself vs his country Wink

I guess I forgot this one:

Quote:
An eye for an eye makes us all blind
-Gandhi

"Bláëm Ronnų sid Ronnų bédyoaldóvr feś"
To exchange eye.IND for eye.IND make-blind everyone

Quote:
"If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may know peace."
Thomas Paine

"Jśe býcenj zháëlé vhél Helvá, hiltól* I'vhél hoitGléśyvést, isc Śinvést ýéfhiný vëlin"
If there-is.FUT must exist problems, allow.COND it to exist during-day.1SG.GEN, that child.1SG.GEN know.COND peace.

(I might change this one, I don't know if the two 'be/exist' verbs work quite this way...)
* I could also add the emphasizer suffix to this, so it would be more like "please, let it be in my day (as opposed to what I'm about to say)" It would be "hiltólmaas"

And one from my Facebook nation (I figured it needed a motto Wink ):

Quote:
"Existence is existence as change, under a realm of possibility"
-me

"Vhél geFléin, déz Anyáryenistų"
Existence be.cond-(existence as change)*, under possiblity-realm.GEN.IND

* yes, my conlang has a verb for "existence as change" Very Happy It's quite useful when talking about people, animals, nature, or whatever - anything animate, as it will (certainly) change during the course of it's lifetime.

I like this one best:
"The world is adangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."

Two versions of philosophy from dogs:

1. If it falls on the floor, eat it. If it turns out not to be food, you can always throw it up later.

2. If you can't eat it, and you can't f**k it, well, p**s on it.

edited second one so T_F can read it on his family computer.

That is AMAZING. (^_^)

I haven't got any translations yet except for the first two below, but I wanted to post some quotes I like, which happen to be from various cracked.com articles, various stories and manga I've read, and my brother. I failed to mark where many of them are from, though, so I can't tell you who I'm quoting. Confused

@Achemel: Regarding your quote of Eldin's post, could you please censor the quote as Eldin has done to the original? It seems the dirty words are blocking T_F from viewing this thread. Thanks!

How do I censor something? Sorry I've not asked sooner - I've been working a lot this week.

Eeeeeeedit:
And I've just looked like a smart person at what eldin did and I'll do the same immediately. (^_^)

Emitare uses 'standing' to mean 'fact', in this case in a similar construction to English's 'it's that ...' or Japanese's '... n(o) da'.

I sat there for five minutes trying to figure out how to say 'just' or 'only', I finally settled on 'the one fact'.

Thanks ^_^
I was originally trying to come up with something based off the word for 'battle' or 'fight', tasja, but those were all too long (karemitasja, 'country-fight', just didn't work.)
I have an overderivation problem - whenever I need a new word, I always try hard to come up with ways to derive it from extant words when I really don't need to.

I try to do that to an extent, but only as much as is necessary, to preserve variety and variation of sound etc. Of course the sounds will be changed, especially due to letters etc surrounding the core derivative, but I prefer to have less of a substantial connection and more an implied one.

I'm using this to see, how does the "old" and "new" disagreement sentence pattern works Very Happy

"The world is adangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."
-Albert Einstein

nn Mūna an hrēdan Plassa perētiam, ponbanuam Animas Hadru de, no pon Animas montre, o ekki debanuam.

the land a dangareous place is-yes, because-not beings evil do, but because beings look, and something do-not.

OR

nn Mūna an hrēdan Plassa pere, ba pon Animas Hadru de, no pon Animas montre, o ekki ba de.

the land a dangerous place is, not because beings evil do, but because beings look, and something not do.

Somehow I like the "old" style better (although it's fresh and new Very Happy ). I don't really think any actual gloss is needed in here Smile
