I'm quite impressed that you picked up on any of it, actually! I didn't think Alurhsa was a particularly common language for anyone to pick up a few words in.

Just from what I have seen on the website, I got that info. I notice things like "bilingual" as "sehályensá," and I believe I have seen the language referred to as "Álurhsá Hálye."

I can't pronounce any of it, though.

That does seem to be a common complaint about Alurhsa, actually. If you're interested, check out the sound files on my blog to hear what it sounds like. Blog is at http://blog.alurhsa.org.

I already have been to the blog, I rather like how it sounds!

It's not really that I can't pronounce it, just that I don't know how to pronounce some of it. I can do most of the consonants (except the dotted y), but the vowels are where I slip up. I could probably pronounce them if you gave X-SAMPA or something of the sort for them.

I think I have the X-SAMPA in the grammar section, actually. If not in the web one, then in the PDF version that's linked to in that section.

Essentially, acute marks a long vowel, no diacritic is a short vowel, dieresis is an "ultrashort" or whispered vowel, rather like the varieties of shewa found in Hebrew. Circumflex is a nasal. The grave accent marks the odd ones, and you can check those out in the grammar.

There is no X-SAMPA in the grammar section, and I see no link to a jpeg.

I would GUESS:
á a ä â à /A: A A_X A~ {/
é e ë ê è /e: E E_X E~ U/
í i ï î ì /i: I I_X I~ aI/
ó o ö ô ò /o: O o_X O~ V/
ú u ü û ù /u: U @_X U~ &/

Not a jpeg, a PDF. Go to the home page of my site, click the Language link on the left, and scroll down the resulting page in the right hand frame. Alurhsa Grammar as a PDF is the first of the three PDF files downloadable at the bottom of that page.

Not sure I agree that á is /A:/, I would call it /a/ actually. And I'm not sure on ò as /V/ or ü as /@_X/. I'd have to go check the document myself, which I could if you find you can't download it for some reason.

Ah, I see it now, thank you!

You have á shown as /A/ and a as /a/.

ò is actually /7/ and ü is /V/, my mistake.

There are a few other places where I messed up.

Considering the X-SAMPA that you gave, I believe that I could speak Alurhsa understandably, but with a noticeable Terran accent.

Speaking of the ZBB, has Zomp said anything about when it would be back up again?

He is trying to get hold of Spinn (owner of the spinnoff.com domain). The domain expired on October 27th.

The ZBB is up, if you edit your hosts file and include an entry mapping the IP address to www.spinnoff.com. Instructions on www.zompist.com I believe. NOT the best way to do it, but it does work in the short term.

I think, it that's time when people are settling back into school (if they do go to school) and find that there is a lot more work to do that causes the emptiness in the forum. Hopefully it will revive soon, with people coming in wih new scripts, and conlangs. ETC. ^_^

It's so good to see new posts here. It's been half a week, or maybe almost a week, since I've seen anything new.

Hemicomputer, and maybe others besides the last three posters on this thread, have also posted in this subforum; but I never can answer the "What are you listening to?" thread other than "Nothing", so I just read it, I don't write to it.

Please; details? Which death was most interesting? Did you un-die yet? How?

None of the deaths were particularly interesting. I did un-die, three times.

If you died three times and un-died three times, how are you still dead?

This is a very mellow, low activity sort of board it seems.

Of course I suspect if we each plan to just contribute more often, that would change quickly, wouldn't it?

I know I'm terrible at that. But I confess I'm being that way on all the boards these days, as I finish up this semester's courses and prep for a 3-week vacation in Thailand...

I hope you have fun in Thailand! ^_^

I studied Thai for about a week at the University of Leeds in a "Intoduction to East Asian Langauges" summer school course. It was quite fun and I enjoyed it but I haven't continued my studies. >_<

I'm afraid my Thai is pretty non-existant. I have books and have looked at it, but for some reason I find all of the tonal languages really intimidating. Add the script, which is also rather challenging, and the fact that the East Asian cultures generally aren't among those that really fascinate and excite me, and it means my daughter will be doing all the interpreting! (She is reasonably conversational in Thai, since she's been living there for over a year now...)
