He probably does. We also both have fictional armies at our command. _________________ Iwocwá ĵọṭãsák.

What's the little three-letter black-and-white mostly rectilinear horizontal-and-vertical thing written in the lower right quarter of the page, close to the page's center? It looks like Tamil's script? Is it your real name in an Indian script? |

Is it a word in a language? If so what word and what language? If it's a proper name that isn't also a word, whose name in which language?
langover94 wrote: | im actually fine with the IPA (ive actually memorized it) but it would be nice to produce a copy in X-SAMPA so that other members can read it. | It's not that I see the characters and don't recognize them; it's that I only see little blank hollow square boxes. I don't own this computer and am not allowed to download anything on it, including other browsers and other fonts. Even though I can sometimes see IPA in e-mail and on Yahoo!, and some (but not all) wikis, I usually can't see it on phpBBoards. I don't know why. If I did know why I still couldn't fix it. |

Oh, that. I thought you were talking about the Kaqal page.
That's "Bangla" written in the Bengali script.
I'll get X-Sampa up soon. _________________ Iwocwá ĵọṭãsák.

There are still four I can't see:
The last Turquoise one, and
the 4th, 5th, and 6th Purple ones ([p something], [t something], [c something]). |

Last Turquoise one - alveoler flap (not tap)
The other ones are ejectives. _________________ Iwocwá ĵọṭãsák.

Tolkien_Freak wrote: | Aeetlrcreejl wrote: | Last Turquoise one - alveoler flap (not tap) | ...what's the difference? | AIUI a tap is like a one-time trill; the flexible or mobile articulator quickly makes contact with the hard or immobile one then rapidly reverses direction.
But in a flap, the soft or mobile articulator starts in one position, moves to make contact with the hard or immobile articulator, then breaks contact while continuing to move in the same direction.
A tap is like knocking on a door once (when, e.g., you're expected to knock three or four times). A flap is like a "drive-by knock".
Does anyone know any different?
But anyway the IPA chart has just one row for "taps or flaps". And, most of the time, "trills, taps, and flaps" get handled together. There may not be any languages with two different phonemes whose only difference is one is a tap and one is a flap? Does anyone know? |

The Japanese r is a lateral apical postalveolar flap. (That's the only flap in Japanese.) |
