Not really; I remembered what I know of you from what you've said on this bboard, and just guessed -- an educated guess, I guess, since you seem to be saying all three of those first questions are answered "yes".

"rokas" is the only word I (maybe?) recognize. If it has to do with "hand" or "hands", I "recognized" it (sort of).
It's a Slavic language of some kind, right?
Or at least a Balto-Slavic language? (since Latvian, which is my guess, is Baltic rather than Slavic.)
Is "rokas" borrowed from a Slavic language? Or is it as Baltic as it is Slavic?
Lettisch or Latvian or Livonian? (I live in Livonia, but not that Livonia.)
Or maybe Lithuanian (Lietuvich?)?

It is indeed Latvian.
Latvian <roka> /'ru6.ka/ (though /'rua.ka/ would probably be a more usual transcription) is cognate to Lithuanian /ran.'ka/ and Russian /ru.'ka/ (from Proto-Balto-Slavic *rankā). Although its graphical representation might make it look more Slavic than Baltic, it is Baltic as much as it is Slavic, since there is a consistent correspondence between Latvian /u6/ and Lithuanian /an/, both from Proto-Baltic *an.
Just a sidenote: I believe I've mentioned it before, but Livonian is Finno-Ugric, closely related to Estonian.

Yes. What's the poem mean? Why is it a poem? Who is the poet? Why is s/he important? Or is s/he?

It is a poem by my absolute favourite poet Vizma Belševica (brief info about her can be found here). Being one of the few Latvian writers whose works have been translated to many foreign languages, she has also been called the Queen of Latvian poetry. Here's a rough (and probably ungrammatical) translation of the one I gave...
Cut my hands off! Since childhood "I want!" and "Give me!"
These insatiable fingers know only to ask and to keep.
But love is a hand in which a butterfly can land,
Winged only so long as fingers do not touch it.
Can you guess some other words now? (An off-topic question – what languages do you speak?) If you're interested in something like the gloss or pronounciation or smth, please tell me. (Also, just for fun, I could attempt a Lithuanian translation, if you're interested in such a thing)
Maybe all that should be switched to PM though... |
