I figured this forum needed something posted here, so I thought I'd start with a question.

As I've stated, I have a very deep spiritual connection with the Alurhsa language, world, people, culture, etc. It's as though at some level my spirit *is* Alurhsa, as though it really exists somewhere and I'm remembering it and trying to record and share it as one who belongs to a culture might share their heritage with others around them.

How many other people here feel that way about their world, people, language, etc.? If you don't, then how *do* you relate to it? Is it just a hobby to pass the time, something you plan to use for a book or story, something you love but don't feel is in any way "real", or what?

I don't have such deep connections with my conlang, however, I can imagine that creatures would speak it in a separate world. It is mainly for a story but I believe as I develop it further, I think that I may have a connection much more spiritual to it.

I think that should be a multi-choice poll, because my feelings go from the second to the fourth options Very Happy

Look at
http://www.chrisdb.me.uk/misc/conworld-code.html
The Conworld Code
-By M. Wiekens

especially at the sections

Supernatural Elements
Magic, ESP, Telekinesis, Rampaging divine beings... Things a that are not part of the scientific world as we know it.

SE5 - Supernatural Elements are the focus of my conworld or at least heavily abundant. Eclipsing technological/scientific matters entirely or nearly entirely.
SE4 - Supernatural Elements are widespread and a matter of importance.
SE3 - Supernatural Elements are important, but not abundantly present.
SE2 - Supernatural Elements play only a minor role.
SE1 - None, no magic/gods/psionics/fantasy science etc. exist at all.

Evangelism
I've found some constructed worlds to be little but... well.. propaganda for their authors personal beliefs. And that can make some of the more heavy handed ones kind of... annoying in my personal view. Basically this is about how much your own philosophies and attitudes influence(d) the creation of your conworld.

E5 - My conworld is strongly influenced by my personal beliefs (religious/political/philosophical etc.)
E4 - My conworld is notably influenced by my personal beliefs, but also to a lesser degree by other factors.
E3 - My conworld is influenced by my personal beliefs, but equally by many other things.
E2 - My conworld is influenced by my personal beliefs, but only to a small degree.
E1 - My conworld is not particularly influenced by my personal beliefs.

Purpose
Why'd you do it? Pick all that apply.

-rp - Roleplaying.
-b - To write a book about it.
-e - An exercise in philosophy/biology/linguistics/spirituality/sociology/science etc. (this includes creating a world for say... the languages, or the wildlife.)
-f - Just for fun!
-v - To be an illustration of my personal philosophies on what is right and wrong. And why that is so.
-o - Other.

Not sure I'm quite following you here. Is your personal view somewhere in all that message? Or is it your site? Or are you advocating that I should be approaching the whole thing, or just this question, a different way than I am?

No. Or, at least, I wasn't saying which it is. (It's in there in the same sense that every word of the U.S. Constitution is in the dictionary.)
halyihev wrote:

No. It's Chris D. Bates's (the maths student from Notts) site; it's M. Wiekens's code.
halyihev wrote:

Not suggesting you replace one approach with another; suggesting you, or others, might find Wiekens's "code" approach helpful in answering your question. Kind of suggesting everyone tell us about their conworlds in Wiekens's code, which, if filled out completely, would also give a (possibly very rough) rough answer to your question.

I believe that that is a different way of stating our personal opinions about our conworlds.

If I use that system:

It would be SE4: Supernatural Elements are widespread and a matter of importance, E5: My conworld is strongly influenced by my personal beliefs (religious/political/philosophical etc.) , Rp: Roleplaying, B: To write a book about it, F: Just for fun and E: An exercise in philosophy/biology/linguistics/spirituality/sociology/science etc.

Ok, then by that system, mine would be:

SE3 (Supernatural Elements are important, but not abundantly present.), E3 (My conworld is influenced by my personal beliefs, but equally by many other things.), and -v (To be an illustration of my personal philosophies on what is right and wrong. And why that is so.) and -o (Other).

The problem, though, is that I really need a reverse-E3, and reverse-v, because it's more that my own personal philosophies have been modified the more I work on "rememebering" or "developing" (depending on your point of view) my conworld.

I build my own religious ideas into my conworld, so I could be said to believe in the religion of my conworld, and I have said that several times myself, but since the ideas come from me first I dont like to imply that I live in "a fantasy world".

I had a dream not too long ago where I spoke Mädëšk. the whole time and it was a complete language; after I awoke I managed to remember some of the more complex grammatical constructions and a lot of the vocabulary. It helped me understand my own conlang more.

I do have a deep connection to my conworld, but unlike you I don't know what culture I "should' have been born into - or I haven't even fully developed/remembered that culture yet. It really does seem like memories to me, too, but it's like I've just traveled through the world a lot.

That's a cool dream. Glad it helped you understand your conlang better.

I use my conworld and its concultures to work out different religious and/or spiritual ideas I haven't made up my mind about. Somebody *there* strongly believes! each thing I suspect could possibly be true (or am just not yet totally convinced is false).

As far as Itlani is concerned I feel that it is a RSR. That is a "Realm Somewhere Real". I also feel that psychically I live there. I have often dreamed of the place and in these dreams spoken Itlani. In these dreams I have often visited the same places and the details have remained stable.

I feel as if I am a hybrid, part Terran, part Itlani. The Itlani language is very much the language of my soul.

Please check out my website - new stuff is going up everyday!

Itlani:
